Morning trouble for PATH train

1/3/2008:

And a couple more reader cameraphone pics. Thanks, Todd! One from the over-crowded light rail to JC, and the line at the PATH station downtown.

1/3/2008:

One more.. reader Colleen sent this story in from the recordonline.com, showing how widespread this problem was, even for folks outside of Hoboken, with the overcrowding and delays.

1/3/2008:

Due to “sleep conditions,” I’m a bit late getting to this story that has affected the PATH in the past. A couple track fires had broken out today, delaying many commuters this morning.

How many of you experienced problems today?

Here are some of the reader mails that were sent in:

“I was on a train to WTC and before we left the station, something arced out just inside the tunnel. Lots of noise, sparks, and then smoke. I immediately got on a ferry so I don’t know what it looks like now but I imagine it’s a mob scene. I think NJT was diverting midtown trains trains to Hoboken at the time.

Glad I came in early today.”

And this reader said:

“Due to a fire in the old path repair shop, path service is suspended going in/out of Hoboken. This is the 3rd fire today, and is expected to potentially be an extended operation. People may want to plan accordingly for their trip home if this continues throughout the afternoon.”

Remember this PATH fire last year? “Squatters” were suspected of starting this fire.

And another reader sent this photo in showing the unusually long line at the uptown Ferry terminal:

hey potatochip-between your user name and your one mile drive to work we’ll be calling you Diabetic in a few years 8)

I left home at 9.15 this am, got to the PATH at 9.20, realized the chaos as I was locking my bike and then quickly pedalled (into the wind) to the Uptown Ferry. Caught the 9.40 and was at my desk east of 5th on 51st by 10am. Couldn’t have gotten there faster if the Path WAS running.

I don’t waste Hoboken’s valuable land parking a car, and I don’t pay 10K per year and up for the “privilege (read: PAIN) of owning a car. I think last year I spent about 6K on planes, trains, enterprise and zip cars all year long. OK, maybe I did get one bike and a number of bike parts stolen off of Hoboken Streets. Also, let the ferry rider beware that NY Waterway tickets purchased from their desk are only good for 30 days-though I think ones purchased out of NJT machines are good for a YEAR!
ride on,

Wow. Do we have a most ridiculous comment of the year award yet for 2008?

Lets see… I suck at math, but I will give this a shot. Let’s say you take 40 trips a month, times 12 months, that is 480 trips a year. Lets say out of those 480 trips, you get delayed or somehow “inconvenienced” maybe for 20 trips. That’s only 4% of the time.

So, you have a 96% chance of making it on time to work everyday and there not being a problem.

I don’t think that’s so bad.

You live in a city…. Get used to having to put up with some of the problems.

If you drove, you’d be rolling the dice each time you tried to drive through the tunnels with traffic delays…

Plus, unlike NYC transit – you can actually see improvements done to the path system. They have painted a large amount of Hoboken terminal, they are buying new rail cars which may even go in service towards the spring/summer… who knows…

They at least are trying. I’d rather support the ones who are trying than those which are blatantly not.

Just my $0.15.[/quote]

After getting over my initial reaction this morning, those were my thoughts as well, this is the first time since the about last Feb when some paper on the tracks caught fire that the PATH seriously inconvenienced me
