Santa Mockery

Drunk Santas is what this country has become

What do you think of those bar crawls that happen from time to time?

What about when they take a traditional and wholesome family events such as Christmas and Santa Claus, and essentially make a mockery of it? These “SantaCon” type events are almost embarrassing to watch. Loud-mouthed, drunk idiots stumbling around in religious costumes is not appealing to many people I’ve spoken with. Just add this to the list of what is wrong with this country.

Last year, Gothamist called this event a boorish parade of conformity.”

I snapped this photo this past weekend, where a gaggle of fumbling drunk Santas were coming home from the NY Waterway Ferry uptown. When they got to the intersection at 13th & Hudson – they had no regard to the traffic signal, and wobbled into the street, demanding that cars stop for them. They had a don’t walk signal, and even a button that they could press to have the light change sooner. They weren’t having it because, to these fools, the world revolves around them!

I agree with JKinHOB… if you don’t like the fact you live in a young City that does bar crawls or drinking then move to an area that doesn’t do that. You can’t be so self entitled that you think your way is the only way things can be done… People complain all the time on this website about how negative things are in Hoboken. Why? Try to enjoy were you live without bashing everything about it.

Seems the only way people learn is through harsh experiences……I say run them over & maybe they will think twice about doing it again or the following night out…….or just send them to the Land of Misfits for rehab.

I don’t see a car in that picture. How do you know he is stopping traffic and not waiving to someone?

While I do agree that there are a number of traditions that this country has negatively diluted, I dont think that SantaCon is an example of diluting the Christmas spirit. Especially when it is a charitable event (not sure on specific numbers, but I know there is ~10K+ money raised as well as donations of 20K+ lbs of canned foods). People are going to go drink anyway, so at least there are donations to charity and an increase local business traffic.

As far as people disobeying the pedestrian traffic signals, I think it’s rediculous to use this as an issue point. Stand on any corner, any day, and at any time of the week, and you’ll see some a-hole crossing at the wrong time.

Expect those same people that were complaining last week for the NYC event, to be complaining even more this weekend for the Hoboken event. I’d suggest them moving to a town with less bars per square foot (what it’s known for other than political corruption) while interest rates are low.
