35 Minute Bootcamps {Doomed!}

35 Minute Bootcamps closes in Hoboken?

Earlier, we received a message from a member of Hoboken 35 Minute Bootcamps saying the following:

“35 minute boot camps, formerly of The Monroe Center suddenly closed its doors. They sent an email out to all of the members at 4:30am in the morning stating that effective immediately the business is closed.”

We called to try and verify – and got no answer.

They didn’t seem to have any kind of update on any of their online properties. Their last “activity” was about two weeks ago.

Also asked the reader for a copy of that message – but haven’t received as of yet. (EDIT – see the email down in the comments. Confirmed from several members. “tax trouble.”)

Whether they closed for some legitimate reason, were having landlord issues, or plan on relocating is not known at the moment (or even if this information is accurate).

They have been an entity in Hoboken for about five years (and even had a run-in with Hurricane Sandy – and successfully re-built). Who knows. We don’t pay for physical fitness that we can achieve ourselves for free, so regardless of what the situation is – just figured I’d throw it out there for consideration.

The IRS does not collect sales taxes. That is the State of NJ. So the writer of the letter to members is either careless/inattentive to details (consistent with the story), disingenuous, or the victim of some sort of scam.

Sad to see this gym go. It was pretty apparent something was going down over the past few months. They always remembered to charge sales tax! As recently as August 1st they sent out an email offering “one year paid in full”.

they didn’t pay their taxes.

This will be the last email you receive from 35 Minute Boot Camps.

Dear Member,

I am not sure how to start this email but I have to write.

About a year ago my business was flagged by the IRS for not charging sales tax. We have hired two accountants in the past and they did not do their job. This caused us to get backed up.

As we have been battling to fix this it has caught up with us and with sales being low we got backed up.

So the end of this story is that the IRS is closing us up this coming week. The last thing I want them to do is come in while we are having a class.

I just want to sorry to all that have entrusted us with your fitness goals.

As of this email we will be officially closed for good.

We paid for months in advance. How can we get our money back?

I called my credit card company to dispute the charge

Thanks for the reminder. I haven’t disputed a charge in so long I forgot that was an option. First agenda item tomorrow!

Wow, that sucks! But it’s odd that they couldn’t absorb a 7% hit. And wouldn’t the IRS allow them to repay in installments? And why the IRS and not the State of NJ?

They should have mentioned the name of the accountants so others can exercise caution if they were so bad.

As usual, the government gets in the way of everyone. It was a good business a lot of people liked.
