Hoax: Puppies
02
October
These Here is a picture of cute pups were found in the STREET over in Park Slope, Brooklyn somewhere.
HOAX ALERT: I can’t be bothered with stuff that isn’t confirmed anymore… Unless you can give an address or it’s from a confirmed local source, such as a pet store, etc. No more of these will be posted. MOVED OVER TO “RECENT INCIDENTS” and off the home page.
“Hi,
Rescued 6 black lab (mix) puppies out of the middle of the road on Saturday. PLEASE help find them homes – otherwise, it’s Animal Control – which means they only have 5 days. We’ve bathed them, sprayed them for fleas and wormed them….but we can’t keep them. They are currently in a kennel in my basement since I don’t have a fence. I’ve lost count of the number of rescue groups that I’ve contacted, only to be turned down due to no room. Please check with every dog person you know to see if they need a puppy.
If anyone is interested, or knows anyone who might be, let me know.”
Thanks
Josh

Dear 411: Thanks so much for helping these pups find loving homes. However, I believe you may mean they’re in Park Slope, Brooklyn, rather than JC. Still, easy enough to get to Park Slope from here.

It’s a HOAX! My friend just sent me the same email but the pups were in NC! SAME PIC AND ALL!
From Durham, NC…

I got a similar e-mail as well with a different e-mail address than both Josh’s and the NC one in post #2. It tugged at my heart strings, but what would be the benefit of a hoax though??

I guess its a bait and switch.
“oh hey thanks but we already were able to find them homes. If you like labs though, I have a friend who is selling them. Here is the contact info.”
Not saying this is a smart or ethical sales method by any means but if 1 person out of a 100 buys from them then they probably view it as a success.

I believe it’s actually a way to phish for email addresses which will then be sold to some kind of pet supply marketing company.
I removed the email address.
I thought since the email was forwarded from someone I know/trust it might have been verified.
Never again, unless the source email is from a reputable source in HOBOKEN.

This is definitely a hoax. It’s been spreading through office email systems like wildfire. People have called only to be told that the puppies are spoken for. This is a clever way to phish for active email addresses, as thousands of people will innocently reply to these bogus emails. Unless you know the person sending you an email such as this, do not bother forwarding to friends and family. You’ll regret the backfire you get from them when they get bombarded with spam emails for porn.

That sucks rocks. It reminds me of those newspaper ads for brand new cars at holiday clearance sales where a $35,000 car is advertised for $22,000 (fine print says 1 offered at this price). You go there and they say its sold, but look at this luxury model for sale for $45,000 – “it’s nice, yah?”

I just got a response from the guy (I emailed him after we knew it was a hoax):
He said:
H Debbie -
Sorry, it sounds as if all the puppies are taken (they weren’t mine — received the email from a friend of a friend). A couple people I know called about them and got a message that all the puppies have homes. Thanks for inquiring though.

I just called the guy and he said there are no more puppies, but his cousin is a wealthy Nigerian diplomat with 17 million USD in a Swiss bank, and all I need to do is pay the escrow release fee of $10,000 and he will split the money with me 50/50. I told him 40/60, and after a while he agreed as long as I also pay a $5,000 wire transfer fee, which is peanuts compared to the incremental % of the 17 million (sucker!). Those negotiation classes at NYU really paid off!
So anyway, this time next week I’m going to be sitting pretty on my ranch in Costa Rica surrounded by as many cute little puppies as I want!
So long suckers!

And further, 411: Reading your post…. Sorry you were left feeling hoodwinked by someone local who seemed trustworthy.
Is it possible that s/he was also hoodwinked?
I followed up w/the posted email address, only to receive an “I’m really sorry, I was forwarding what I’d received, so I also got snookered…” kind of response.
Talk about some sociopath’s “Whisper Down the Lane.”
So many of us animal lovers have a knee-jerk reaction, when we hear about animals in need (esp. baby animals).
Heinous for that to be exploited.
