Mets Lose, Philly Wins – Playoffs (almost) set

Well, it took to the last day of the Major League Baseball season to decide the outcome of the National League Playoff scenario.

Philadelphia fans rejoice, and NY Mets fans sulk in what was the worst September collapse in baseball history. Glavine gets shelled for 7 runs in 0.1 innings, and the Phillies cruise to a 6-1 victory.

What will happen in the first round of the playoffs?

Here’s a few polls (see new World Series Poll to the left, too!):

howard is awesome. gotta love him.

as for the pitching and the heart, they can certainly do it, i just don’t see anyone stopping the cubs. they are insane.

as for boston – they have a legitimate shot at it, but i don’t see anyone stopping the angels – and boston draws them in the opening round. i’d love to see the rays slip into it though

Pitching is always an issue, and the Cubs and Red Sox have the best pitching staffs IMO. That being said, the Phils have heart. That’s what gets them to the dance. I feel like this year is better than last year in that Howard is hot, Moyer is unbelievable considering his age, and I just can’t think of one player that is seriously under performing (although Burrell does his best to under perform). Our pitching is solid, just not great.

In addition to all that, Jimmy Rollins is a serious contender for MVP and I just love that these guys look like they’re having fun out there.

The ’93 team was made up of fat, mid-30’s men (I think) that were platooned. Some talent + lots of heart got them to the World Series. I’d like to see this team go all the way. We CAN do it. I believe it. They need to prove me right.

I also love the commercials they play during the game asking the players what America doesn’t know about them – it ends on the most improved infielder Howard stating “I’m just a Teddy Bear America, a big teddy bear.” I love him and his attitude.

if you go back to the thread where we voted on which NY teams would make the playoffs, i conceded i thought the mets would, it was their division to lose.

i said something about the phillies having great offense, but lack of pitching. well, they’ve weathered the lack of pitching, and the playoffs is where that really comes out. so they might have a tough time in a 5 game set. it’s going to be very difficult for anyone to beat the cubs i think, but all the NL teams are riding a decent wave into the playoffs, so momentum isn’t really in any 1 team’s corner.

you got that going for you!

I am really hoping we make it past round one this year. I know that I should be trash talking, but I’m as nervous as a bride. I really enjoyed ’93 till the very end and would like to enjoy 2008.
