Hoboken’s Precious Grass

9/14/2007:

Here we have a Hoboken411 reader who’s a little bit irritated regarding her neighbor’s lack of attention to their lawn, along with other unkempt properties in town.

I noted a similar situation last month over at the Clearview Cinema lot uptown.

She says:

“Is there an ordinance anywhere that people have to keep their lawn mowed? My neighbors have a gosh darn forest out there practically. Also now that the superfund site (the mercury lot) on 8th and Grand is no longer owned by the government its become an overgrown mess too – so bad that you can’t even walk on the sidewalk some days because the weeds are so high – what’s the deal?

Coincidentally, while approaching the area 6th & Willow the other day (by Holy Innocents Church), I stopped in my tracks. I SMELLED FRESH CUT GRASS! As I got closer, I heard a lawn mower! It was almost like music to my ears. It was just a comforting sound that reminded me of growing up in North Jersey.

Much better than garbage trucks, construction noise, and sirens.

So taken aback by this infrequent smell and sound, I shot a 10 second video. I should have extended the video by an hour so I could replay it as a therapeutic relaxation soundtrack.

Just a suggestion, but have you ever tried speaking with your neighbor?

Along the same lines, we have a neighbor who lets his dog, um, do his business in his yard. And leaves it there. For weeks. The smell makes our yard unbearable. It’s so bad that a construction crew was even repulsed by the sight/smell when building on a nearby lot. Are there any regulations about this?

My landlord hadn’t mowed all summer. When the neighbors on one side complained he had it mowed on their side and left the other half waist high!
Have you spoken to your neighbors? I know one couple (not my landlord)whose yard fits your description and would undoubtedly fix their yard right away if anyone complained. They just haven’t been able to agree on how to handle the yard which got out of hand this summer and no one has said anything to them. If anyone did, I know they’d just suck it up and get it done.

I will be moving to Hoboken in about two months, having recently purchased an apartment on 7th and Adams. My realtor told me that the empty lot on 8th and Grand was going to become a police/fire station (with no mention of the environmental issues). The last update on your site re: the lot is from April and indicates it was bought for senior housing. Are there any further updates?
