Update: Some signals coming to SW Hoboken from Hudson County

5/10/2012 Update:

4th Ward Councilman Tim Occhipinti has been hard at work with the Hudson County Traffic & Transportation Department to get some action regarding the treacherous conditions in SW Hoboken. Here’s the scoop:

  • The county approved a traffic light at Jackson & Newark. Bids are going out now, and work will be complete Spring 2013. The other intersection at Harrison & Newark is being looked into, but no current plans for a signal are in the works.
  • Jackson and Harrison intersections along Observer Highway are solely Hoboken’s responsibility – so signing the online petition will help push the city to take action.

Oh – and the traffic pattern change at Monroe & Newark Hoboken411 told you about back in March was fixed by the County and will go into effect on Monday, May 14, 2012.

Letter: Observer & Jackson a giant mess – need light ASAP!

Update: Online petition now available

With the population of Hoboken surging, certain spots of town are becoming more dangerous by the week. Now while the city is busy painting lines for little bicycles, treacherous intersections like Observer Highway at Jackson Streets (and other congested downtown spots) are obvious vehicular and pedestrian war zones. This vicinity seems to be the scene of a violent accident on an almost daily basis.

Hoboken411 reader Kristen adds more to the story:

“I moved to the area with my husband a few months ago and we have witnessed multiple accidents (Car and Pedestrian) including 3 within the past 3 days where the cars had to be towed away and people taken away on stretchers.

We believe a traffic light is an absolute necessity here, since it’s a big family area and is very dangerous for our neighborhood.

I hope residents that agree with this will sign our petition so we can take the collected signatures to take to City Hall and get some action.”

411 Note: The petition is currently only a “paper” petition – online petition coming soon now available.
