Fire – 300 Washington Street
Hoboken Fire at 3rd & Washington burns for onwards of four hours
11:00pm Update:
The fire is still going at 3rd and Washington, 90 minutes after HFD evacuated the building and the companies on scene battled the blaze from the exterior. Even neighboring buildings across the street were almost in jeopardy, and burning embers and debris blew across.
Here’s how the fire looked from near the W Hotel a short while ago.

@timber – they won’t know until the fire is extinguished and an investigation is completed. That’s standard protocol, unless witnesses saw someone actually starting the fire.

@mariuche – that’s what I thought – worst is when fires happen simultaneously in adjacent communities.

8:23pm – HFD Fire Chief mentioned that the fire was “under control” (i.e., they have it surrounded and don’t expect further spreading) and secondary searches of the upper floors are taking place at the moment.
The mutual aid from Newark help really helped the situation tremendously, allowing them to knock the fire down faster.

@marg – I only heard of one report of fire inhalation (first responder). No reports of actual residential injuries. Sounded like everyone in building that was awake got out. Unsure if anyone was “stuck” inside or injured. We’ll find out more after the investigation. Hopefully everyone is A-OK.

8:36pm – Another view of how the Hoboken Farms looks from street level as firefighters attack the blaze from above.
Also – one tenant on the 2nd floor said he had two cats. If you see kitties running around – please notify HPD.

Hope this isn’t a return to the “Hoboken condo conversions” of the past.

@lunchment – this building was already condo. That would make no sense – even to an idiot that likes starting fires. See list of property owners below:

9:45pm – all HPD personnel evacuated – they’re fighting the fire from the exterior now. They had a partial collapse of the top floors. What a nightmare, happy everyone got out.. hope now it doesn’t spread anywhere else. Luckily the building next door is 3 stories shorter.
