$10 gym memberships at Planet Fitness

Will $10 Planet Fitness memberships hurt other Hoboken gyms?

As many of you know, Planet Fitness is now in Hoboken.

They’re running a $10 monthly membership promotion through December 30th of this year – which is far less money than every other gym in town. Some random question that crossed my mind were:

  • Will this $10 membership hurt other Hoboken gyms?
  • Are they going to limit the number of new members?
  • What if this new Planet Fitness becomes so over-crowded that it’s unpleasant to work out there?

There are benefits, however. If you read their flier correctly, the gym IS open 24 hours a day, almost 5 days a week (Monday through 10pm Friday). So that will help alleviate some of the potential over-crowding.

Has anybody remember the gym that never opened on 14th St?. Think it was supposed to be called Riverview Fitness. I paid $400 for a year membership. First the gym had problems getting the necessary permits to start work. When they couldnt get the permits they started construction anyway. Then they got served w/ Stop Work orders by the city. When the gym went to court city inspector who served the Stop Work Orders never showed up. This went on for 2 years. It was not easy getting my money back. After that fiasco I am not joing Planet Fitness until there gym is open and people actually using the machines…

Anyone who showed up for opening day found an orange “STOP WORK” notice on the front door and a notice to members saying that unexpected construction issues will delay opening. No new open date was given.

Why do I get the feeling that an unmarked cash-filled envelope of sufficient thickness was not delivered in exchange for a COA?

Other gyms are beginning to compete a bit (coughClubHcough), dropping their membership fees especially for new members. Good.

I don’t know about anyone else, but this location… It’s just full of bad business vibes and karma.

Still, good luck to those of you who have signed up!

I called to find out the scoop today. $1o is the basic membership and for $20 a month you get free tanning, free use of the massage chairs and 1/2 price at the juice bar… now even if I never go to actually work out… I just saved money on the tanning I do. 🙂 I’m sure it wil be PACKED at first, it opens late Jan and is new BUT like all things it will settle down. PLUS being open 24 hours during the week is awesome. I often don’t get out of work till 10pm. They don’t do areobic classes though. They will have an arm, chest and butt class but no kickboxing, yoga etc, which is a bummer for me bc I like that stuff. Also it’s no commitment, you can do a month to month membership. I’m in, what do I have to lose.

Is this month to month? Or am I signing my life away for the next 5 years? (albiet at only 10 bucks a month, it’s cheaper to belong here for 5 years than it is to be at NYSC for one)!
