Planet Fitness back on track in Hoboken, NJ

Finally – the Planet Fitness location at 605 Washington Street is getting back to normal. This spot was a terrible eye sore for months with the scaffolding and construction going on. The new giant windows are interesting, but the building still looks like some kind of freaky mental institution.

But at $10 a month for repetitively lifting weights, who’s complaining?

Uh, we forgot something at Planet Fitness

1/20/2012 Update:

When Planet Fitness said that had some “construction issues” which delayed their opening, they weren’t kidding!

A massive scene over at 6th & Washington now, they’re doing all sorts of heavy duty work that requires industrial strength scaffolding around the entire building. They’re also replacing windows on the 2nd floor. Who knows, maybe the building was in danger of collapsing or something.

On the bright side, Planet Fitness is giving all current members the first month free, which proves they’re a reputable company. Way to go!

Hoboken Planet Fitness temporarily shuts down the day they open

1/18/2012 Update:

Citing “construction issues,” many residents were frustrated that Planet Fitness had a big stop work sign on the window today.

I wonder, despite the cheap $10 monthly membership fees Planet Fitness has – will angry residents demand 30 cent refunds for each day they remain closed?

As a alternative, members can use their Edison or Bayonne facilities until they re-open. Renting a Hertz on Demand Car will cost about 6 months of membership fees each time, though – so be aware.

Planet Fitness Hoboken taking memberships November 28th

11/15/2011 Update:

Planet Fitness Hoboken (605 Washington St.) is having a pre-grand opening sale starting on November 28, 2011. They’re advertising $10 per month rates, which has many residents happy that less of their money would go down the drain for memberships that are never used. The cheapest way to waste money yet in Hoboken!

Kidding aside, Planet Fitness’ claim to fame is their “judgment free zone” gyms, which allow people to just workout without the nonsense seen in other “highfalutin hookup rooms.”

Planet Fitness to take over Empire location in Hoboken

10/6/2011:

A bunch of folks are wondering what’s going on at the old Empire Fitness location at 605 Washington Street.

Construction workers told me that a Planet Fitness location is opening up before the end of the year. Planet Fitness is known for their “no-nonsense workouts” – which is good for folks who care less about uppity attitudes in the gym.

However, the Planet Fitness Website does not show Hoboken as coming soon location just yet. Stay tuned!

Looking for additional feedback before abandoning NYSC. Too overcrowded? Enough equipment? Clean?

Is it just a ‘Planet Fitness’ thing – I’d estimate that only about 30% of people bother to wipe down their machine after use. Not sure what the percentage is at other gyms.

It would probably help to post a few signs that say;

‘Please Wipe Down Your Machine After Use – or we will post your photo on Facebook’…

This place is now open and I’ve been a few times. My impressions:

* The place seems much bigger than Empire Fitness which occupied the same space.

* Equipment purchases seemed to be based on expected demand. For example, the place has 45 or so treadmills whereas Empire had maybe 15 (working and not). Lots of cross trainers and step. Empire had one smith machine, PF has six, etc. They managed to cram them in without making them seem crammed in.

* As a result, they can EASILY accommodate more people than Empire yet not seem as crowded.

* All the equipment I need. No dumbbells or curling bars past 60lbs, tho. Not much in terms of free weights. But between the smith machines and other equipment, I’m satisfied. I’d prefer doing dead lifts with free weights but the smith machine will do.

* Lots of goofy “no judgment zone” messages festooning the walls.

* The locker/shower rooms look good and are not cramped. Let’s hope the less well behaved members won’t tear them up quickly.

* No towels – bring your own. For $10/month, no prob.

I hope this place stays in business. The fees are so low that they probably take in lots of members who intend to go but won’t. They have some upsell options but no one’s tried to push them on me.

I’m going to probably check out that kickboxing gym on 9th and Madison. My friend has been trying to convince me to go. I heard they are having sales on Friday. I’ll check it out then. She said they have weights and cardio upstairs as well.[quote comment=”212355″]ISCICUAdvise get yourself a thread mill and a exersize bike…if you can fit it in you apt or where ever you riside…If your able fit and young enough join the Navy Seals and you will really be put to the test..These places are full of crap and taking your money.
