Hoboken Now & Then: Downtown Firehouse

Hoboken has changed a LOT over the years!

Most of you don’t realize that Hoboken used to have an “El” – an elevated train that connected the Mile Square with Jersey City Heights. It ran along Observer Highway / Newark Street.

Take a look at these two shots comparing how the downtown fire house looks today, compared to “yesteryear!”

Amazing difference!

Most people also don’t realize why all of the streetcars and rails were destroyed.

Another reason why one can’t cut through the firehouse at the point was in the early 50’s a fireman named Bosco was hit by a vehicle and killed while assisting a rig backing in to the fire station..intersection of madison and newark ave..There was a tavern on the corner intersection of madison and newark st..google that one.
Most people also don’t realize why all of the streetcars and rails were destroyed. The Great American Streetcar ScandalnullGM bought and dismantled Streetcar lines nationwide to force the U.S. to become dependent on automobiles and buses
Stampler..if your bnr you will remember that the observer hw el was dismanteled in the year 1947-48..It was a trolley that ran from hoboken to pavonia ave jerseycity.if you were here would know that.We had the 31 grove that went to jersey city from hoboken..washington st bus line later became apple line..There was one car to a family and in spite of 60,000 residents..Gas was 10 cents a gallon ..gold was 30.00 an ounce.time change..A vehicle cost 1000.00.or less.A home cost 5,000$$.Paycheks were around 100 per week depending.trollys were not making any money..Annual income was 1725.00..While your at it google about the 3rd ave l in nyc that was taken doen in the late 30’s..was that a scandle..Best part is usa sold the scrap to japan and they gave it back to us on december 7th 1941..were you around at the time? At the premier of the movie (gone with the wind) at the State theater, people dressed in black ties and gowns. Wikipeidia is a chitty source ..try the historic bldg at the shipyard 😛
Most people also don’t realize why all of the streetcars and rails were destroyed. The Great American Streetcar ScandalnullGM bought and dismantled Streetcar lines nationwide to force the U.S. to become dependent on automobiles and buses
You talk like one of the old goombas sitting in one of the clubs downtown. My helmet is hanging on the wall of my man cave with its battle scars still visible. BBQ in new jersey yuck I got spoiled by eating real BBQ in north carolina both eastern and western carolina style, new jersey stuff is nothing more then meat with ketchup. Smart move getting out and heading south just watch the grass grow and for excitement watch paint dry. I’ll be at a affair in forked river for another escapee maybe you’ll be there?
Escape same age as you..memory sharp and parents told me beside what i could remember..Hope to see you in forked river mid sep..Still have your monroe buddies helmet?? 68 in re to Goompas..Past history..dutchie mutt gallerger the horse on Sunday was a good day to figure a 2 if 1 reverse and 2.00 place parley..The only goomba assoic left is the Monto San Giamico Club on 6th and Adams st..They just play Morda for a glass of wine. Just memories and happy days..Ask Sibby who knocked the wall down with the rig on the job..No relocation untill september,in a complex near you..At least in Lacy and waretown you don’t have to move the car for the sweeper or worry about corners. The Police are kinda tough..Tax payers complain of what our kids earn in Hoboken but check out what these cops make in ocean county as well as the high taxes..Love to chat with you..in person..Come on here to trade barbs and have fun but so many use it as a sounding board…to vent over what they cannot change. We proberly bent elbows at the monroe buddies club years ago when Richie was the bartender rip..Keep in touch…
You talk like one of the old goombas sitting in one of the clubs downtown. Smart move getting out, the peace and quiet is going to make you nuts in the begining but you’ll adjust real quick. Parking is easy but traffic isn’t much better with refugees like you realizing how much city life sucks. The cops are the same except for the high and tight haircuts. If you want to escape taxes move to either tibet or mar but you do get more for you $$$$’s.it’s still new jersey.good luck
