O’Donoghue’s to close after 25 years in Hoboken

Seems that Irish Pub O’Donoghue’s is calling it quits this year, and is shutting down on June 1st according to this flier / announcement.

Will it get bought out and taken over? Or just converted to more condos?

Great bands but this bar is simply dirty. IF you want to feel like you are still in college then go here. THe glasses are dirty and there are roaches in the bathrooms, ick!

Most of my experiences here have been okay. There was one bartender back in summer of 06-ish who was very rude. she worked on Saturday night. My husband ordered a shot and it had ice still in it, and was filled only halfway, so he requested another one, properly poured with no ice. The bartender rolled her eyes and said, “Just drink your f@#$#’n drink” and wouldn’t serve him again. She proceeded to give customers attitude the rest of the night.

Haven’t seen her since then, so it won’t color my review. We saw the Nerds there last fall and had tons of fun, even though the Nerds were an hour late, but that isn’t the bar’s fault.

They take the bottles out in the middle of the night after the bar closes. What a racket.

Took me months to get used to it.

A stabbing/slashing that happened around 2 o’clock in the morning… I guess the frat boys had too many car bombs….

  5. strand tramp says:

frat boy don’t carry knives. that would be a ghetto custom.

“Two men were arrested after a fight inside O’Donoghue’s, cops said. A bar manager told police that Sunday around 2 a.m., a 25 year old Millington resident allegedly slashed a 24 year old from Carlstadt, with a broken bottle, then ran outside. One actor, whose nose was bleeding, told cops he was beat up outside by somebody else. The other actor had a 3-inch gash on his forehead, police said.”

hmm…I’m still not guessing frat boys. I’m going to go with italian guido types. Jersey Shore.

since when is this place called Saints and Sinners?

  8. swim87 says:

It is in the process of being bought by a friend of a friend of mine and a group of investors. If all goes well, they will renovate and reopen in September under new management.

If you think this place is a shite hole now, you should have seen it in the 80’s. I first saw it in 88 or 89, before they “renovated” it as it looks now.

In fact this movie shot a scene there over a pool table and and other parts of Hoboken as well. Not as rewarding as On The Waterfront though.

Are the owners selling the building or just the bar? It might be cash out time and back to Ireland for them.

I meant this movie: True Blood

JMO, but another establishment that feels the need to close is sad. Don’t know the circumstances behind this decision, just hope they don’t build more condos. If they do, please do not give out abatements unless justified.

  11. hobokendave says:

If they don’t own the building sounds like their long term lease expired and the rent got jacked. No building owner in Hoboken gives long term leases anymore so they CAN jack the rents every 5 years…which leads to the high turnover in Hoboken.

  12. Rosewood Ghosts says:

I heard a rumor that it will reopen in the fall as the Hoboken Pour House.

  13. mikey578041 says:

Last time I was there about 4-5 months ago on a thursday night there were literally 2 other people in there who seemed to be friends of the bartender.

  14. Easy-E says:

The story I have on this place is that the guy who’s there most of the time, Vinny is a partial owner and runs it for the old man that’s owned it for years. Vinny is a really cool dude and hopefully he’ll be able to profit from the change.

You’re right, though, it’s always the same couple guys in there unless it’s a weekend.

It’s a hole and it needs a serious overhaul. The upside is that the place is *huge*. Far bigger than most other bars in the whole city.

The guy who owns Fillipo’s on First was supposed to open something in the one side of the bar that’s usually closed. I wonder if he’s still involved or it’s now being taken over by other people?

  15. nuttyirishman says:

Good location but a total hole, not even dive bar level. Redone it could be a serious earner

  16. Furey says:

If someone can do a major overhaul, clean it up, put in a better design of the space, and make it into something more like a wine bar/restaurant would work well at that part of town. Or, at the very least, an improved look like they did at McSwiggan’s.

  17. beerzgood says:

$15 is way too much to charge for Bud Light. That stuff is horrible.
