Hoboken Police and Fire Blotter: 5/2/2011

Hoboken crime and fire action: May 2, 2011

Various noteworthy incidents, crimes and fire-calls for Monday, May 2, 2011. This post may be updated and “bumped” periodically.

  • 11:53pm: Bomb a dud
After two and a half hours dealing with the “beeping package,” this so-called bomb most likely turned out to be nothing serious. Note to people: Bombs usually tick and beep – only on TV and in movies like MacGruber.
  • 11:53pm: Passed out female
A woman reportedly passed out in front of Energy Kitchen on Hudson Street. Hope it wasn’t the burgers!
  • 9:53pm: Drunk passes out
A drunk customer was refused entrance to the Madison Bar at 14th & Washington – and decided to lay down and pass out in front of the establishment instead.
  • 9:30pm: Beeping Mailbox
Hoboken Police & Fire – as well as Jersey City Bomb Squad investigating a “beeping mailbox” at 84 Washington Street.

Remember when they sent the robot to “defuse” the NYU student’s Stevens project from the garbage can in Stevens park?

Just as an update on the whole downtown beeping thing:

JC Bomb squad is on the scene with about half of hoboken’s police force and two of our ambulances. 134, 134A, and 134B are active, I’m not sure which are where though. Anything within about a block of 1st and washington that wasn’t already closed has been evacuated, and HPD is maintaining a tight perimeter from observer to second from hudson to bloomfield. That perimeter applies to pedestrians and vehicles. It took a while to locate a postal employee who could provide a key to the mailbox, however I believe that an employee as well as the postal inspector are on the scene at this time and JC Bomb Squad is “making contact with the mailbox”.

I just walked through that mess downtown about a half hour ago. Jersey City Bomb squad is on the scene. Big traffic snarl. Busses re-routed to local streets. Washington is closed from Second Street to Observer Highway. First and Newark Streets are closed from Hudson to Bloomfield. Fire trucks and police cars everywhere. Amazing how trucks that say BOMB SQUAD on the side don’t scare people away from hanging out in front of the yellow police tape.

I know! I saw it too. I was very nervous and grabbed the first cab I could to get home! I hope everyone is safe.[quote comment=”206532″]I just walked through that mess downtown about a half hour ago.
