Serious Squirrel Conniptions for 411 Mascot Oscar!
Hoboken411 Mascot Oscar got quite a bit of fan mail last week – because of his “nervous” video over at Maoz Vegetarian. The overwhelming majority of the letters used the word “cute” more than once.
So as a follow up to this real world look at dog psychology – here’s another example of the diverse personalities of our four-legged friends.
My dog is so alert when it comes to the squirrels in Hoboken – I sometimes believe that he thinks that’s his only reason to exist! Whenever we pass by an area “known for having an ample supply of squirrels” in the past – he immediately becomes 10 times more alert and strong in his walking stance. Most of the time, I’m too busy to let him chase and whine after the furry rats he has a 0.1% chance of catching… but sometimes I have a little extra time and indulge his cravings.
Like this particular instance last week (before he got his Spring Mohawk Makeover) over at Church Square Park. This devious squirrel felt content on the top of the fence – and continued letting Oscar bark and bark and bark. It drove him nuts (much to the squirrel’s satisfaction, I gather).

Heh, teasing squirrels.
My dog is indifferent to squirrels but LOVES fantasizing about catching birds during our walks sometimes. Mostly, my dog just likes to sniff around a lot and explore, and socialize/play/run around with other dogs

Crazy for squirrels. Once had to go on a speed chase that involvded turning many corners with stopped cars pointing out which way the chase went. Finally caught up after 5 blocks and returned to where I left my friend to explain that yes I have a well behaved dog, except for the squirrel thing!

I am not a petite nor a weak girl, but Oscar has almost ripped my arm clean out of its socket walking through this park! This wasn’t even the worst I have seen him, he’s INSANE. And the squirrels, they LOVE torturing dogs, they do it to my dog too, but he’s old and doesn’t really give a crap anymore.

Yeah, squirrels are cute but can be annoying sometimes to dogs.
Do treats help curb/distract from this behavior? Or no way? I find they sometimes do whenever my dog goes nuts over birds and other dogs. Also, whenever I see her approaching a situation or creature she might go nuts over, I keep her close to me and talk to her. May sound weird but helps me control and calm/distract her.
