Flashback: Hoboken St. Patty’s 2005

Here’s a little bump to this interesting slide show from just seven years ago. Amazing how the parade has evolved from almost “quaint” to near massive flash-mob status, isn’t it?

Do you think the Hoboken St. Patty’s Parade has gotten worse?

[box size=small color=blue type=quote align=right]I’ve seen this thing evolve from a really fun day to just madness…[/box]Some observations and photos about what the Hoboken St. Patrick’s Parade has been like over the years from Hoboken411 reader Mike.

“Loved all the fantastic coverage of the Hoboken St Pats parade. This year’s was actually my 7th one and I have to say, I’m glad it’s being moved to during the week and if it’s not, this was certainly the last one for me as I will make sure to get out of town if it’s on a Saturday again…

In my 7 years I feel like I’ve seen this thing evolve from a really fun day to just madness. I told some younger folks this (I’m 30) and they tell me oh it’s just b’c you’re getting older….. I found these pics from St. Pat’s 2005 (my first year in town) and you can tell from the pics that it was DEF a fun party day but NO WHERE near the out of control trainwreck we’ve seen get worse and worse since I would have to say about 2007 – Would you agree???”

You can see the rest of the photos here.

The year I am doing whatever it takes to project my property on my own. In years past the police didn’t show up when I called, so this year i’ll be protecting my property. I am tired of having to dish out the cash to repair damages to my home from these drunk bastards. This year, I’m ready ! I feel sorry for the drunk idiots that damage my property this year, don’t say you were not warned !

From someone who has lived here for 15 years, and worked behind a bar for 5 or so of those years, I can say that it is much worse than it used to be! However, that could just be my age talking. The fact of the matter is, I couldn’t stand drunken 21 year old assholes 6 years ago, I still can’t stand them. The difference is I don’t have to serve them anymore, which is awesome.

I think the parade on the first saturday in March was supposed to be a “family” thing (at least that’s how eveyrone wanted it to be seen) but let’s be honest, that’s just not what it is/was. It was a drunk fest, which I participated in a few times myself.

If you don’t want to deal with the mess, stay home. That’s what I plan on doing!!

Being from the ole school, the saying is the two people you always have to tip well are your barber and your bartender. Just wondering how you’ve made out in tips under normal times and then when the idiots and drunks take over during festivals. I would imagine your regulars appreciated your service and tipped well, and the idiots couldn’t give two shits. Am I correct?[quote comment=”214299″]From someone who has lived here for 15 years, and worked behind a bar for 5 or so of those years, I can say that it is much worse than it used to be! I’ve been here of over 16 years. It has not gotten worse at all. The big change is the 20 somethings from 15 years ago got married, had kids, but never left. These mid 30s parents that used to party are now the complainers about what goes on, the exact thing they used to do. They forgot how they used to be. That is all.

As one of those mid 30s people I know what to expect. I was one of them. The difference is that I get a big laugh out of the mess that Hoboken turn into. I LOVE IT!

i didn’t vote for Zimmer.

Crowd behavior has typically remained the same. The problem is, as Hoboken has grown over the last 10 years, so have the St Pattys day crowds.

I was in town for the 2001/2002/2003 St Pattys day drinkathons and you saw the same things that are going on now – out of control 20somethings, vomit all over town, lines to get into bars at 11am (I remember being in an hour long line at Willie McBrides, and someone brought over 2 cases of beer from the A&P, keeping everyone ‘hydrated’ while in line). The mayhem was there.. just not in quite the numbers it is now.

Much more tame in recent years. Of course the vocal minority baby stroller nazi’s have to ruin everyone’s fun. Jealousy is a horrible thing.
