Maureen Kelleher – Artist
Interesting new addition to the directory today. She was displaced from New Orleans by Katrina, and found a new home in Hoboken. Her studio is in Union City, up the 14th Street viaduct.
Maureen Kelleher, visual artist, combines paint, cloth, and wood to create colorful, quilt-like, works of mixed media. Political, existential, and historical topics give Kelleher’s work a thoughtful and emotional bent; her self-taught aesthetic enmeshes timeless universal themes in the organic textures of the folk artist. Her wooden quilts present life’s warp and woof: our common humanity, enmeshed in the particular warmth, pain and reality of everyday lives. A longtime New Orleans resident, Kelleher layers in the experience of the modern uprooted and the cards Katrina dealt to those who survived.
