Hoboken crime and fire action: February 16, 2011

Some afternoon incidents, crimes and fire-calls throughout the day for Wednesday, February 16, 2011. This post may get updated and “bumped” periodically.

  • 2:20am: Hudson Bagels Robbed
A man walked into Bagels on the Hudson (which is a 24 hour establishment) – and stole merchandise (cigarettes) and money from the cash register. Suspect is a white male, dark hair and black pants. A civilian who noticed the incident chased the actor near 7th & Garden before losing him. HPD is canvassing the area now.
  • 8:45pm: HHA Water Damage
An overheating furnace at 3rd & Marshall Drive (6th Floor) set off sprinkler systems in the building – in addition, steam pipes were damaged – flooding all floors in the building. There is no present threat of fire – but major water damage and cleanup required.
  • Smelly traffic nightmare downtown
At around 4am this morning – an astute Hoboken Police Officer reported “a strong smell of natural gas” coming from the area of 1st St. and Willow Ave. PSE&G arrived about an hour later to begin work. As of 8am – the intersection is closed while work takes place, causing traffic congestion due to the redirection.

More updates to come…

Construction has ended, but there are two large plates over the road. Considering the smell is still massively strong, I’m guessing they’ll be doing work on this for the next few days.
