Road Closures due to water main break

1/8/2011:

Please take note if you’re planning on driving uptown today…

Uptown Water Main break in Hoboken

Another water main break in Hoboken this morning has caused the closures of:

  • Willow Avenue – 14th to 16th Streets (Northbound Lanes)
  • 16th Street – Clinton to Park (near the dialysis center)

Have a nice day!

“In the U.S., people kind of believe cheap water is their right,” said Wayne Klotz, a national expert on water systems and past president of the American Society of Civil Engineers. “There are very few cities that charge customers what it costs them to deliver water” because people demand low water rates. “That starves the system of maintenance, and all you have done is start the clock ticking on the next major break.”

Well, at least none will have to worry about snow removal in that area

To those that are blaming the traffic on the police… what are they supposed to do? How do they prevent the volume of vehicles from entering the city? Their primary purpose is to prevent idiots from entering the prohibited area.

As I’ve personally witnessed many times, some cones or a barricade is hardly a deterrent for a driver who is hell bent on going past.

You’d need an additional dozen or more cops at intersections surrounding the area, and none left to patrol the city.

Doesn’t the city have an OEM department to help out in emergencies like this? How come they weren’t directing traffic? What about the weasels that write the press releases? Can’t they help too?

No one earns their keep anymore.

I sat in this traffic on Saturday morning as well. Must have arrived just after the United Water truck hit the Hoboken cop car. Just like someone above already posted….at least a dozen cops all standing around looking at the bumper on the ground while total grindlock ensued. Not one thought to walk over and maybe direct traffic at the intersections. Total chaos. Thanks HPD!

Saturday 6AM awoke to a very loud noise coming from my basement. Jockey pump turned on vibrating my apartment. Called fire department at 6:30 PM. No info regarding water main break. This would have explained the turning on of the pump and saved me muchof anxiety, e mails and phone calls at 6AM. After someone arrived at my basement and told me the street was closed at 13th and Willow did I realize it was because the water pressure decreased rapidly. It happened again at 2AM this morning. I guess it wil become a regular occurrence. This is 5 water main breaks in 2 months here in Hoboken. Why does the mayor keep talking about parks when the infrastructure as well as the roads are in such disrepair? Riddle me that one batman!
