Hoboken Mayoral FAIL

12/29/2010:

Bottom Line: Dawn Zimmer failed

Say what you want about the Blizzard that socked Hoboken. The number one reason the city residents suffered was due to complete lack of planning & knowledge of what to do when a giant storm is imminent.

Smart municipalities begin salting before the first flakes come down – and continually do so throughout the city until the snow begins to accumulate. Then the plows come out (with salters attached as well). This melts much of the snow, keeps accumulations much lower – and allows cars to at least travel through the city without getting stuck. The city didn’t salt – and started plowing much too late – and with underpowered equipment. Previous blizzards in Hoboken were handled exponentially better.

An overwhelming majority of Hoboken residents think Zimmer did a terrible job – and wasn’t even in the city (like Newark Mayor Cory Bookerwho actually helped residents instead of Twittering lies and fluff).

Take the poll below if you haven’t already.

How did Hoboken handle the December 2010 Blizzard?

Hoboken should be ashamed of the way the city handled this snow. Four days later the streets that have two lanes were still reduced to one because someone does not know how to remove snow. Horrible response to an emergency, especially when it was on the news two days before the first flake fell.

It was on the weather blogs 7 days before the first flake fell. [quote comment=”201553″]Hoboken should be ashamed of the way the city handled this snow. Finally, to most of the posters slamming the mayor, i suspect you fit the following mold:

Two of the last three mayor were crooks – it’s cool.
The former parking director arrested for stealing $600k – hey, what do you want from me?
The state attorney general investigating voter fraud int he 4th ward – nothing to see here, move along.
Every ounce of snow is not removed a few hours after 24 inches fell in a 18 hour period – THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

Its snow guys. To borrow a line often directed at people like me, if you don’t like it, then move.

The residents should also be held accountable. This storm was forecasted a day in advance. At the very least cars should have been removed from the snow emergency routes. The city also offers inexpensive garage parking during snow storms. Finally, I watched a dozen cars get stuck (all small cars with no 4wd) in the middle of the street at 8am on Monday (vacinity of 11th & Washington/Bloomfield). I suspect most were abandoned and subsequently blocked the plows.

On a related note, the NY Post is now reporting that there was a deliberate work slowdown in NYC among sanitation workers. Does anyone have reports of Hoboken Sanitation driving around with their plows up?

If that report is true about workers not doing their job they should all be fired immediately. [quote comment=”201482″]The residents should also be held accountable. If there was any type of slow down it will be very hard to prove. If I were to advise them I would simply tell them to go by all of the rules, safety and contractual, and do what the exactly supervisors tell you to do and do nothing on your own. It is the most effective weapon that workers have and it is absolutely legal.[quote comment=”201506″]If that report is true about workers not doing their job they should all be fired immediately.

Hey Hoboken 411 —

I wish you had added the category “eh” in the poll on the Mayor and administration’s response to this blizzard. Then I’d definitely vote in the poll… worst response ever seems a little extreme and perhaps unfair considering reports from friends in Park Slope and Queens who didn’t see a plow for 3 days.

Overall, I’d have to give those in charge a C minus. And add that it is disturbing to me that no one is taking responsibility for the mediocre response… if any city officials are reading this… some times just ACKNOWLEDGING peoples’ frustrations, acknowledging that things went wrong and taking responsibility for it (like Bloomberg often does) goes a long way in diminishing anger and negative feelings.

And can we talk about Cory Booker for a minute — totally awesome that he was out there responding to tweets and helping out where he could. Even when he had bad news to deliver, sorry still no trash pickup tomorrow, people definitely appreciate the fact that he was out there doing something. Love that guy, why can’t we get someone with that caliber of leadership to run Hoboken?

Worst ever is appropriate considering the city is a mile square.[quote comment=”201456″]Hey Hoboken 411 — I wish you had added the category “eh” in the poll on the Mayor and administration’s response to this blizzard. Booker helped push a NJ Transit bus out of the snow, that’s how hands on he is.[quote comment=”201456″]Hey Hoboken 411 — I wish you had added the category “eh” in the poll on the Mayor and administration’s response to this blizzard.
