Hoboken Breakfast Nuggets: 12/13/2010

12/13/2010:

Juiced up NJ Cops & Fireman: Did it really cost taxpayers?

Yesterday, a report came out about late New Jersey Doctor Joseph Colao – who apparently fraudulently issued prescriptions for steroids and HGH (human growth hormone) to over 245 police officers and firemen in the state. 10 Hoboken Policemen and two firemen allegedly took part in this “scam.”

The report also cited the usual arguments for and against using steroids – the negatives being “roid rage” and anger – to “heroic” acts from some of these cops and firemen (saving lives, etc.)

However, one part of this story I found a bit incomplete: “Evidence gathered suggests the total cost to taxpayers reaches into the millions of dollars.”

If any city government pays a fixed amount for city employee health insurance – aren’t the rest of the transactions between the individual and the insurance company? (i.e., co-pays, prescriptions, etc.?) Seems like the only folks that get screwed by fraudulent medical acts – are the insurance companies. No?

One Irishman speaks his mind about fledgling economy

There are many differing opinions on the state of the global economy – and more specifically, whether Ireland should have been bailed out or not.

However, I stumbled across this video of a Irish businessman speaking freely about how he feels about the situation. Caution: excessive profanity, but hilarious!

Weekly weather outlook for Hoboken

We had a break from the bone-chilling weather the past day or two – but come Tuesday morning, it will feel like it’s single-digits outside. Bundle up!

Enjoy your week!

wiskeytango1, how ironic of you to discuss hitting the nail on the head then proceed to misguidedly rant about a point entirely unrelated to the video! Last time I checked the Irish recession was due to banks being over-exposed to the Irish property market and not due to “800 years under Englands rule” (yawn).[quote comment=”200921″]jc what did this disinchanted person hit on the head..His county has been killling catholics and Protestants for 800 yrs under Englands rule and he hit what nail on what head.? 17 and blurb ..thankyou for the hearts and flowers..History tells us in 1850 England tried to starve the Irish to death…Recession is worldwide…Last time you checked what? This is why your a blurb..Religion seems to be the vehicle of distruction all over the world. What banks are you talking about? When did Ireland become a factor in the common market? Economy is at an all time low world wide..except for China who the US owes .I believe that irish guy is catholic? Do things ever change in that country.? BTW im not Irish..The irish gave away the weather reports to the nazis during world war two.
17 before you migrated here i was an authority..in Hoboken affairs..ditto blurb a rou. hugs 🙄 [quote comment=”200944″]He is the authority on everything that happened over 25 years ago and we are blessed to have him.

Ah, stupid me. Gosh, all along I thought it was the collapse of Ireland’s housing market that had grown exponentially over the past 10 years, similar to that of the US. I thought that as a result of that extremely weak housing market that the construction sector (which makes up 25% of Ireland’s GDP) was ultimately brought to a stand still which helped cause a 14% drop in GDP in 2 years. I thought it may have happened because there was a considerable amount of problems in their banking industry due to the fact that these banks had 0% chance of being made whole on loans to morons who couldnt pay their mortgages and to the construction companies that no longer had any work to do. I thought it was so bad at these banks that many of them needed to be nationalized in order to stay afloat. I was also stupid to think that consumer spending dopped dramatically. And I guess i got caught up in the moment when i believed that saying “when the US sneezes, Ireland catches a cold”. The US was in a recession itself and was normally 33% of Ireland’s inward investment in manufacturing…that all but went away. But now I know that religion and the English are to blame for this economic downfall because they “killed the Irish for 800 years”. I’m an idiot for thinking that there were some present-day variables that may have caused this recession. I guess the only way to… Read more »

Skellys was a couple of doors down from fiores and was a favorite place of many wiseguys. The food was real good except when the cook was off on a bender. If i could understand anything that you wrote i would respond but, as usual, I am dumbfounded by your attempted comments. You clearly couldnt read through my sarcasm so i’ll just tell you straight up that i dont care where things were 50 years ago. They’re not here now and now is what we’re dealing with. You are stuck in the past and just whine about how things used to be so much better. People may actually listen if you offered solutions but you never do. I’m stuck in the past? Right. Take a quick look at your posts and take note of how many times you reference Hoboken businesses or govt that no longer exist and how “the newbies” have ruined everything good in life.

I dont care what this irishman has to say either….i was simply responding to your insane comments that it was the English and religion which caused Ireland’s recession 2 years ago.[quote comment=”201003″]17 aka hammer head..it’s not me that’s stuck in the past..you dolt..You won’t understand anything any one writes unless you agree..who the F**k cares what this irishman says?? Aren’t medical records confidential? How can you assume that the Hoboken cops & firemen didn’t need the prescriptions?

So what you’re saying is that 10 of our police and 2 firemen have committed Insurance fraud?
I find that hard to believe. If that were true, wouldn’t they have been fired or at least suspended?

if the 2 cops were NOT part of the layoffs, then wouldn’t it seem fair to bring back 2 honest cops and kick these guys to the curb? – but i am sure that their union has some sort of protection for crooked cops[quote comment=”200905″]So what you’re saying is that 10 of our police and 2 firemen have committed Insurance fraud?I find that hard to believe.
