Street Cleaning Thievery?

12/2/2010:

City ignoring street sign hours for profit?

The street signs on the east side of Washington Street say sweeper hours are 8-9am. One Hoboken411 reader witnessed summonses being issued AFTER that time period:

“I was walking past the Elks Club at exactly 9am (per Verizon Wireless time) today when I saw the sweeper coming up Washington, with the Parking Authority mini-truck ticketing these 2 cars. The sign says no parking 8-9am on that side of Washington.

Generally, once the sweeper passes, you can park there with no problem and it’s usually early in the hour (eg Garden St by 10th is usually plowed by 2:10pm every Monday during the 2-3 no parking hour, and the block is filled up by 2:30).

For those times the sweeper is late, there shouldn’t be any ticketing. But this is a heads up anyway — everyone MAKE SURE the sweeper passed before you park in your regular spot.

The city apparently needs your holiday dough!”

Wait, people actually get tickets?
One month ago, I was late in moving my my car on Willow , but when I got out there, there was no ticket. I went ahead and moved my car, thinking I escaped unscathed, and went on with my day. More than a month later, I receive a large white envelope from good old HPU notifying me that I failed to show up in court, and my $45 dollar ticket for that day which was never on my car got a $10 penalty for failure to appear. The ticket was timed 2:09pm, however I can’t be sure that I had actually moved it by then. Either way, the same thing has happened to my roommates, who are terrible at moving their cars – they never have a paper ticket, but get the failure to appear summons a few weeks later with an extra $10 tacked on. Their word against mine, and I know they’ll just say “it blew away.” So there goes 57 bucks, because paying online has a two dollar “convenience” charge.
sigh.

I have watched them write tickets even when the street sweepers don’t come around cause of rain or whatever reason. No sweeper even present and they sit and write tickets. Its such a scam.

wouldn’t there be a timestamp on the parking ticket?

If the timestamp >= 9:00, then take it to court. problem solved. 💡

Unfortunately it is your word against the person who wrote the ticket. The forms do not have an atomic clock. I went to move my car at a bus stop wel before 6AM and there was a ticket with a time written in that said after 6AM. I pulled over a cop before 6Am to show him that the time was earlier than 6AM so I would have a witness. Still had to go to court though. Parking Authority has not changed their fraudulent ways even if they call themselves the Parking Utility and they hire a PE as director.[quote comment=”200550″]wouldn’t there be a timestamp on the parking ticket? The HPU doesn’t write tickets by hand…they use those “receipt style” machines. It should leave a timestamp. dood correction look agian..the time is stamped on the summons..btw i viiewed a few minutes of the council meeting and never thought this pkg director stuttered..He is a kid lost in space,,,He has no clue of the minds that put the logistics together nine years ago..stevens students my arrse…two people were on call when car got gammed in the system..in fact 5 cars dropped to the bottom..in that time,,Had the bldg been erected properly according to specs there would have been no errors..contractor was Belcore
a forgotten name that gave geearhaart problems since day one after he built two in asia and europe…gearharts people worked 24/7 to put things together. As far as the hpu you get what you pay for…what is the starting salary for an important job..dont stutter ian[quote comment=”200559″]The HPU doesn’t write tickets by hand…they use those “receipt style” machines. The sign says between 8-9:00 A.M., which means 8:59.99 is the expiration.

The sign says no parking between 8-9. If the time was exactly 9 when the tickets were written, I’m not seeing the issue. If the people parked there at 9:01, then they would have a complaint.
