Hoboken forces another business to vacate: Tux Shop Closes

The Tux Shop at 4th & Bloomfield had been in Hoboken for 30 years, and helped scraggly customers get spruced up for formal events (including 411 a few times too!)

They officially closed for business on December 31, 2012.

If you’ve been a customer there, or just looking for a formal outfit to buy or rent – it’s nice to know that they’ve also had a sister location in Bayonne for a very long time (40 years to be exact). A quick 15 minute drive from Hoboken – just head over to 719 Broadway (see map here). The location in Bayonne is much larger, with a better selection of outfits to choose from. Give them a ring at (201)436-5210. They’re open down there weekdays 10am to 9pm, and Saturdays 10am to 6pm.

The choice to close one of their two locations was purely “business,” according to owners – not only has terrible parking and city politics made it harder to do business in this town – but the changing demographics. More families – and less “partiers” also played a role in the decision to consolidate and focus on the larger Bayonne location.

It’s just a shame that Hoboken’s horrific parking situation ever contributes to the demise of any small businesses (recall the thieving muni robots that accepted money when it was supposed to be free?) Additionally, the hiked fees for permits and general business licenses at City Hall makes this town NOT friendly for small-businesses. Just ask places like Park & 6th or Hoboken Unleashed how they feel.

Good luck to The Tux Shop – and be sure to visit them if you want to continue supporting local businesses!
