Board of Ed Candidates Forum

4/12/2010 REMINDER:

TONIGHT at Stevens’ Kidde Hall!

Twelve people are running for Hoboken Board of Education this month. Can you name them? Do you know what they really stand for? If you’re like most people I know (outside of political sycophants who vote for whomever their “Dear Leader” tells them to), you probably haven’t made your mind up yet about which four buttons to push in the voting booth.

Want to make an informed decision?

Then show up to the one and only candidates forum Monday night – April 12th. A quarter of your taxes pay for schools. Slogans and brand names don’t make policy – people do.

Meet the people and decide for yourself. Award-winning documentary filmmaker and occasional Onion News Network satirist Bob Bowdon will moderate the event (and his film “The Cartel” is playing for one night only at Clearview Cinemas).

The Hoboken Quality of Life Coalition, People for Open Government, Hoboken Grace Community Church and Stevens Institute of Technology are the sponsors. Due to a scheduling conflict the event will NOT be held at the usual spot at Our Lady of Grace Church. Instead it will be at Kidde Hall on the Stevens Campus. With so many candidates vying for four open seats, the forum will be broken up into two parts:

First Segment – from 6:30pm to 8pm

  • Kyelia Colon
  • John Forsman
  • Ken Howitt
  • Jean Marie Mitchell
  • Irene Sobolov
  • Kathleen Tucker

Second Segment – from 8:15pm to 9:45pm

  • Leon Gold
  • Perry Lin
  • John Madigan
  • Elizabeth Markevitch
  • Rose Marie Markle
  • Patricia Waiters

Questions will be taken from the audience and admission is free.

Directions to Kidde Hall on the Stevens Campus:
Go east on 6th St. past River Terrace to the Gatehouse entrance of Stevens. Go through the gate. Take the left walkway going up the hill. You will pass a u-shaped landscaped area around the buildings on the left. At the northern end of the landscaped area is Kidde Hall. It is immediately opposite the large, round Gym Building. (or memorize map above – much easier!)

I thought the Hoboken Quality of Life Coalition hated Stevens. Why are they having an event there?

Hoboken Public Schools are suffering… with the expected budget cuts to education (go figure), several Hoboken schools are on the discussion table for closure or restructuring. Our children (our future) need us to speak out on there behalf. Please call the governor’s office, superintendent, and senate office. Let them know we will not stand for such a thing. Our children are not dollar signs. Our children should not be part of any type of budget cuts. In all actuality they should receive more… for example Hoboken High School (Newsweek Bronze Medal Recipient for most improved high school two years running, the only high school in Hudson County to receive this distinction) may be affected by the proposed plans of the powers that be. The principle (Mr. Joy) and his staff have made it a requirement to maintain such an achievement status. Nothing but the best is expected from his students. We must speak out and demand an alternative. They must leave our children alone.
Please call and support the children.
Governor’s office: 609-292-6000 (Christie)
Superintendent’s office 201-356-3600 (Mr. Carter)

So what are you gonna do? Not vote? Not attend the forum? Anyone that stands on the sidelines for this election should relinquish their right to speak about budget or property tax issues forever.

Holy crap, you’re not kidding. I’m glad I’m not the only one to do a double take on Waiters.

After hearing her speak a few times in the past, the idea of her running for a post on the board of education is pretty damned funny.
