East LA

3/31/2007:

Reader Bskills4 sent this observation in yesterday. Did anyone else notice the same thing?

Hey, in case any of your readers are interested.. East La got rid of their happy hour and the place is dark!!

2/20/2007:

So word on the street is confidently indicating that East LA is being sold. Apparently the business wasn’t doing so well, and it was time to jump ship. Some readers are speculating that the shorter-than-usual bar hours might have had something to do with it.

New owners are reported to be The Farside.

No word at this time whether the venue, name or menu will change. No firm date as to when the business will change hands.

I just realized 411 never reviewed this place! Should I be happy?

But they are going to have extra menue items too man!!!! EXTRA!!!!

    When does it open Colin??????

We’re talking about what’s NEXT to East LA. Not East LA. Where is 411 on this one?

There was a nathan’s hot dog place b/t 5th and 6th on wash st. but didnt last long. limited client base … not many chicks going for a chili dog w/ cheese. was expensive too. east la is a joke. the only reason that they havent gotten any health violations recently is b/c roberts is mayor. avoid it like the plague. however, it was packed on st pats!

Maybe he doesn’t know? I do have an idea though, you could go ask them yourself and fill everyone else in ?? Honestly, I don’t think you people understand, he’s a one man show over there – he can’t be everywhere all the friggin’ time!

    Biffy,

I am not sure. It is my friend’s little brother’s place and last time we spoke they had hoped to be open by Hoboken St. Pat’s. Obviously that didn’t happen. I will try and find out.

PS I’m sure this is on 411’s radar, he just hasn’t been inside for pictures

Try the train station for a good grilled dog. Biggies has them too, but more complicated.

This post does not tell me anything about Papaya Grill — I need to know when it opens. 411 needs to stop hovering over his fax machine JOing to Beth Mason’s Press Releases and Get down to 5th and Washington to get the 411.

    1- when does it open
2- what will the place actually be serving
3- will there or wont there be fountain cherry coke??????

That fucking joint should be on Gorden Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares! I went there a few times and everytime it got worse!!!!

I got a glass with lipstick on it once, there were more flys floating around the in a feed the children commercial, the food sucked, and the place smelled like a dirty mens rooms. To top it all off, my buddy was on the bowl for a almost a week with a leaky leather cheerio after his meal. 😥

Had dinner there for the first time recently, definitely nothing to get excited aboot.

  13. HansBrix says:

My first visit to ELA was in 1992. Pretty sure it hasn’t been updated since. Not so sure it’s been cleaned much either.

The idea behind the food is that after a “nukular” margarita or two diners won’t notice the food.

  14. elainetyger says:

Does Dave Roberts still own this place? If so, would a Hoboken inspector fail the place if there were any problems? I get very suspicious of politician-owned businesses, and would not put anything from such a place in my mouth unless I were sure that everyone involved in its safety was on the up-and-up.

  15. 9 says:

This is idiotic. The margaritas at heppy hour were the ONLY reason to go there. The food sucks.

  16. Riggleman says:

This place is horrible!!! I ate it last week and had to wear a MAN-PON for a week. For those of you who don’t know what that is…it’s not fun at all!!!!

Recent experience at East LA is an indication that the former Mayor is no longer involved with the business like the good ol’ days….
Last Thursday night two friends and I ventured up to Washington Street for margaritas. Over the years East LA has always been the place to go for them. What we first walked into was definitely not what we remembered. The bar was crowded with a thug-like clientele. We asked the host if we can sit at a table for drinks. He grumpily sat us, even though the dining room was not crowded. We noticed the bar patrons were also lingering around the booths, making us feel uncomfortable, as if we were infringing on their private party. We apologized to the server and said we just didn’t want to stay. It was as if she could read our minds.
A good comparison to the experience would be to watch MTV’s “Jersey Shore”… that same style and mentality.
No offense to the Roberts Family. But we are in search of a new place to enjoy our margaritas. If anyone has suggestions, please let us all know!
Or if you have stories relating to what we are trying to say, please contribute!

I was going to suggest Baja. It’s been quite some time since I was in there for a margarita. I thought they were more noted for their tequila. I wasn’t sure if their margaritas were as good as they used to be. I remember years ago. It was a hot summer Sunday afternoon. I didn’t live in town yet. I came to Hoboken with a former boyfriend. We went to Baja for drinks. The bartender made me a banana margarita with fresh bananas. I can taste it till this day. My boyfriend at the time was being a grouch. The bar was empty. It was just us. The bartender and myself were drinking the margaritas. It was loads of fun.

Thanks for the Baja suggestion! I think uptown would be a “safer” bet. Turns out that someone from my office was at East La about a month ago while there was a drug raid at the place! He said that there were guns drawn and when all was said and done, there were 12 guys hand-cuffed, faced down on the sidewalk taken out of the place! Supposedly, the people that former Mayor Roberts unloaded the place to have welcomed in this “element”, and that my friends and I are not the only ones that are now avoiding the place because of it.
And we thought it was just the ROACHES that scared us old timers away…

I’ve been going to East LA for about 5 years now and I love it! Margaritas are awesome as well as the food and the staff. There IS a happy hour, not sure why people are saying there is not. Happy hour plus half priced appetizers! Everyday from 5-8. I read something about a drug raid? There really must be another East LA in Hoboken because that never happened there lol. These reviews kill me lol. Dont let these reviews fool you! Be the judge yourself!

How much were you paid to write this since the last post was done on Dec 8th? What are you not posting on the other thread? You have been going here for 5 years and don’t know about the raid? You think anyone believes you? No there is nothing happy when you attract people who deal crack cocaine and bring weapons to our town. Epic fail

I agree with Chori. East LA is an awesome spot! Amazing drinks and a great vibe! The situation about drugs is fishy to me! Did someone pay you to say that? Drugs are everywhere in hoboken your own mayor is corrupt! You probably work for another spot in hoboken and cant stand the fact that at least people go to east la!! Grow up and stop being so judgemental and take out what’s up your ass. At the end if it was such a bad place it wouldnt be packed like it always gets!

What is up my ass is your finger mister, please take it out, you are not hitting my G spot. I would consider your reply more seriously if you had more postings on Hoboken 411 other than this 1, which is your first. Your partner Chiro on the other thread, that was their 4th post. Am I the only person that finds this suspicious? And what drugs you say, ok whatever you say poncho.
