Sasso’s Liquors & Delicatessen
1/15/2008:
New Sasso’s is open
Stopped in to see the new owners Frank and Mark (of the uptown Bagels on the Hudson), who re-opened Sasso’s yesterday.
A couple changes to note right off the bat:
- The serve coffee
- They have a full breakfast menu (including bacon! Hooray!)
- Expanded hours are 6am-Midnight, 7 days week
- They deliver

I only spent a few minutes inside, but one of the things I was concerned about was the roast beef. I truly enjoyed Sam’s store-cooked roast beef (which was purchased from Truglio’s). Frank told me about his secret recipe, how it’s seared in water (to retain juices), and injected with garlic. He seemed confident that their roast beef will be at the very least, on par. He also said that he’s absolutely open for suggestions and feedback from area residents. Good or bad.
Additionally, they’re planning a few renovations inside. New floors, some new fixtures and general sprucing up. For the most part, they want new Sasso’s to offer everything available before, and more.
Good luck guys, and can’t wait to try the RB!
1/12/2008 Update:
End of an Era
It’s official now. Sasso’s finally changed owners yesterday. New owners may re-open as soon as Monday.
Thank you for everything Rose and Sam! I hope the roast beef with the new owners is even 1/2 as good!
5/1/2007 Update:
So I confirmed with Sam & Rose last night that Sasso’s has a deal in progress to finally sell their shop after 44 years. They’re 1/3rd of the way of it being “signed, sealed and delivered”. They hope to be done with the process by the end of the summer, if everything goes well.
I have to say, as much as I’m extremely happy for them, I will certainly be heartbroken when they’re gone. The incredibly kind and wonderful people they are, along with the hard work they put in to provide (my) the neighborhood with a great place for delicious homemade food, reasonable prices and personable attention you just can’t get anywhere else will be missed. If the new owners can put in 10% of what Sasso’s provided uptown Hoboken, they should be alright.
Regardless if this deal goes through, please try and get down there and have a taste of some of their fantastic dishes. It’s my favorite roast beef in town, and I think they sell more chicken products than the Northeast quadrant of KFC. Never been disappointed there! Good luck, guys!

I used to live a couple of doors down from here, great people, great food, and I will still stop in after 7-8 years of not living around there and they still remember me.
I hope they are both in good health and enjoy their retirement!

If you are just looking for the space, this isn’t a bad deal. You could take on the 750,000 and the lease and still pay less than what rents are going for these days.

Another great Hoboken neighborhood place soon to be gone. Yes, nice people and a convenient place to stop by for a variety of things. I hope the new owners keep the commercial space.

Rose said the new potential owner was going to run it as a deli. It obviously won’t be the same without Rose and Sam, so we’ll see how long that lasts.

Seared in water? Not possible. Maybe seared then braised in water (although this might make the meat fall apart). Maybe sealed then cooked in water a la sous vide cooking. Whatever the case I hope it is awesome because Sasso’s is right around the corner from me.

Oh Dear God, not the guys from Bagels On the Hudson (aka Morons R Us), I’m stunned they could find their way three blocks uptown. If they achieve the same combination of cluelessness, incompetence, and horrendous service here as they have at BOH they won’t last 6 months, a sober and non-hungover clientele is a lot less forgiving.
I already miss Sam and Rose.

Agreed. Never been to a place that insists on putting eggs on anything you order in the morning.
“Taylor ham and cheese”
“Taylor ham and chees and egg”
“No egg”
“Right, egg”
“no egg please, it will kill me”
“ok..but I still charge you for egg”
5 miutes later, unwrap sandwich and remove egg.

The guys who own Bagels on the Hudson are really quite nice, however, after my visit to the downtown location last weekend, I would be hard pressed to go back again. Here’s the exchange:
“Can I please get a whole wheat bagel toasted with low fat cream cheese?”
“We are out of low fat cream cheese”
“You’re kidding? OK veggie cream cheese – but not too much”
la la la la after about a 8-10 minute wait (nobody else is in this shop by the way JUST me) I finally received my bagel which is (surprisingly) correctly made.
However, while I was there waiting for 10 minutes you think that the guy at the register would let me pay (where I stood 80% of the time wallet out ready to do just that) can’t get off his cell phone long enough to ring me up. In fact, he can’t get off his cell phone WHILE he’s finally ringing me up and has to get the change out of the register one hand at a time, also trying to hand it to me all crumpled with the change falling out all over the place with the one hand, other hand holding his cell phone. Naturally, I had to comment on how it would be nice for him to get off of his cell phone for 15 seconds to ring a customer up properly.
Here we go everyone, let me know how passive agressive I am because I expect people to do THEIR JOBS. I really hate cell phone abusers. When you’re working, especially in that capacity, get off the phone – unless someone is dying, it’s just not that important. They need better help. I would hate to see Sam and Rose’s shop go to shit because they get a bunch of nitwits to run it.

Why is it so difficult to get a good bagel in Hoboken?

i actually have never had a bad experience at the one on 8th and will hit it late night fairly often. i am sure sasso’s was great and the people were great – but by the time i would stroll in there around 8 or 9pm the stuff looked pretty awful. the owners were always great, but having a later option up by me is always a good thing imo. sorry to see a real neighborhood joint go though.

In response to uptown girl who said:
I’m partial to the bagel store on 6th/Washington near the animal hospital. The only problem with them is that they close at 4pm weekdays and 3pm weekends. They appear fairly clean, the coffee is good, and they have a good whitefish salad.
The store at 8th/Washington is a good place to get Tylenol or cough syrup at 1am. I wouldn’t buy unpackaged food there, as the deli clerk/cashier once got openly angry and resentful when I asked her (very politely) to handle my bagel with waxed paper or gloves rather than her bare hands. The guys at 6th/Wash use waxed paper and generally wear hats.
