Retro Hoboken Fire

3/2/2010:

Does this look familiar?

An anonymous Hoboken411 reader submitted these interesting Hoboken “fire” photos from back in the 1970’s:

“Here’s a few pictures of the fire at the old Hoboken Recreation center that was located at the corner of 12th and Willow. It was once a Hoboken police station back in the old days… I remember there were jail cells in the basement. They had ping pong and other arts and crafts plus games to play, this was all free to the public. I think they offered free lunch there also. It was a great place to hang out with friends. Do they even have a recreation center for kids anymore in Hoboken?”

Well, there is the Boys and Girls Club, but the crown jewel of recreation in Hoboken is the public pool and community center as a “give-back” from URSA/Tarragon in exchange for giving them a huge tax break on more crappy condos on the western edge of town.

Oh wait, the pool and community center were entirely fictional. IIRC, Councilman Cricco claimed it was already under construction. Not!

Northeast I believe. If you go to Google Maps street view, you’ll see a condo building with the parking spots on the lower level is in that spot now.

I remember this very clearly. Many fires back then almost every night and yes now all locations where there were fires are now condos. Not only loss of homes but many loss of lives. Very sad, miss a lot of my family that were forced to move out of Hoboken.
