2009 Hoboken Italian Festival

Hoboken may have a ton of street festivals each year – and even more than one that involves carrying a statue through the streets (see map) – but the annual Feast of the Madonna Dei Martiri is the only one with a spectacular fireworks show!

Uh, complaining isn’t the same as calling out some on their b.s.

You’re right it isn’t. I like this site. It just seems sometimes. That there are alot of disgruntled people in this town. Who IMHO really have alot to be thankful about and very little to be disgruntled about. Nothing seems to please them. It just seems everything and that includes what should be something nice sparks some time of complaining.

Many great memories of family, childhood, and friends when this festival comes around. 83 years of tradition going strong once again.

This is my favorite street event in town. I go every year and walk the whole route along with the procession. I love hearing the women sing in Italian as they walk along. If you’ve never been there for the start you really should check it out. Just watch the women in the crown when she is unveiled… the tears flow & the sign of the cross is made. This is one of those days where you sigh and say “Damm, I love this town!”

The devotees in town have worked long and hard to keep this religious procession/festival in honor of MDM going. For devote Catholics or casual observer, the benedition at St.Francis Church (with the return of the statue) is solemn and comforting.
btw: The firework display on the pier is delayed awaiting the return of those attending St.Francis devotion.

I think the best thing they ever did was move it from labor day weekend to after the holiday and moving it up to the river. This feast is now better then St Anns, better food, entertainment and even zeopples, that secret recipe that st anns claims to have is just frozen dough……thursday night had the sandwhich from Filomena deli, hot turkey with melted mozz and gravy…on crush toasted bread….it was real good…even worth the 12 bucks…..cant wait till later ill take on the argentina steak sandwhich….and tomorrow has a very good lineup of entertainers….
