St. Ann’s Festival 2009

7/26/2009 Update:

The procession has begun!

Pamplona, Spain may have their annual Running of the Bulls – but Hoboken has their annual “Walking with the Saint!”

Be advised that there will be many various street closings for the next few hours, as the procession makes it’s way throughout Hoboken. Looks like the rain will hold off!

Today is the final day of the 2009 St. Ann’s Festival.

See original announcement after the jump.

I can’t believe that all the years I’ve lived in town. I never got to see the saint procession until yesterday. I was impressed.

Thank god this thing is over. I find the procession thing a bit creepy.
I too am wondering why we don’t have an Octoberfest celebration for the German population that settled here.

I’m curious to know what you find so creepy about a group of devotees who are not ashamed to demonstrate their faith. They are not worshiping the statue, but rather the saint the statue represents. Using a saint’s feast day as an excuse for debauchery and drunkeness is what I find creepy. One of the most endearing and enduring characteristics of Hoboken has been its strong cultural and ethnic flavor. The Italian festivals that are held in Hoboken as well as the other cultural and ethnic celebrations are not in honor of the people who settled here, but rather a way for the groups who have remained to celebrate and share their pride in their heritage with the entire community. There is no reason why we can’t have a German celebration. Perhaps you could organize it. Embrace the diversity that is, was and always will be Hoboken!

my kids had a great time at the feast this year…the rides were great!. Too bad all the kaki short wearing douche bags and they’re barely dressed gf’s had nothing but negative…even nasty comments about my stroller and other strollers in general. My kids can’t walk 10 blocks and back again,so to the jerk who made a nasty comment about my kids being too old for a stroller (they are 2 & 3) you obviously don’t have any kids and when u finally have some (I hope you have triplets) we can discuss your stroller opinions then.

I find it funny that some of the people would complain about blocking PC’s street for two hours in an afternoon as being unfair to the neighbors, but the feast isn’t. Day after day, night after night, hard to park, vandalism, urination, noise etc. Please when you complain about one thing try to be consistent with other things.

Yeah, they don’t seem to mind St Pat’s or the typical weekend drunkfest either. They’re only bothered by an orderly protest in front of a criminal’s house.
