And the winning name is…
“PIZZA REPUBLIC”
“Pizza Republic” owner Gregg Kronhaus finally did pick one of the Hoboken411 reader’s suggested names! “jdm” is the recipient of a free “Pizza Republic” pizza pie each month till June 2010!!
They hope to have a soft opening sometime this week (as early as tomorrow).
Welcome to the neighborhood “P-Rep!”

No, not another Hoboken411 photo-quiz, but rather…
Be a part of history in Hoboken!
Filippo’s Pizza at 406 Washington Street was taken over by new owner Greggory Kronhaus on June 1st. He’s working quickly round-the-clock in order to re-open the establishment with an updated interior with authentic Italian “flair,” improved quality and even new menu items.
But one thing he hasn’t thought of yet is – What is he going to call the new pizza restaurant?

Win free pizza for a year!
Kronhaus said: “I am looking for something more American Italian than the typical names you see throughout Hoboken. It could be anything catchy, funny, serious, I am open to all suggestions!”
So he reached out to Hoboken411 – and you, the readers – for suggestions. So make your recommendations in the comments section, and the winning name will receive a free pizza each month for a year!
I’ll be updating this post as construction continues, so you can see what the new place will look like, and perhaps be inspired to come up with the winning name. I may also run a poll for the top 10 names next week… this is an “organic” post, and may change as time goes on.
Read all about what changes are coming below…
Greggory on the new restaurant:
What cosmetic changes are you making?
“Renovation that will have a big visual impact based on what I am doing. Everything from the color schemes which are rich, warm and inviting, to the new cream colored tin ceiling that has a pattern which dates back to the 1880’s. I will be keeping some of the existing tables and chairs, but will also be implementing 2 /10 foot banquet seating to replace a lot of chairs, these elegant banquets are very comfortable to sit in and will encourage more people to want to dine in as well. In addition, I am replacing the old fluorescent lighting with new Italian glass fixtures that are considered transitional in style and are beautiful.”
What about the menu? I liked some stuff there…
“With regard to the food, some of the more popular dishes that Fillipo’s has a big following on I will continue to do, however many of the dishes will change and be prepared, cooked and seasoned differently using a variety of fresh new ingredients. We will be re-inventing a good portion of the menu which will give it a real make over. The plan is to use high quality products and ingredients while keeping the prices as modest as possible and fair. It’s going to be about quality over quantity while still offering the right portion for people to feel satisfied and happy.”
Well, you are a pizza place… what about that?
“The Pizza will go through a dramatic change, using only the best Italian sauce, cheese, flour and special recipes I am perfecting as we speak. I will not offer 18 different kinds of pies like most, but will have a core selection and will stay more traditional focusing on quality, flavor and taste which in the long run I believe will be a successful business model for building a lasting business.”
Anything new?
“One other quick mention is the Mac & Cheese part of the menu. I have to say it is absolutely delicious and I think everyone will agree once they try it. It will appeal to adults, family and kids and I believe will be a big hit. I won’t be surprised if other places don’t try to copy it in a short time. But there’s nothing like the original.
Lastly, we are coming out with a wonderful selection of fresh gourmet salads which you would not ordinarily find in a pizzeria, Then again we plan on being more than just a pizzeria, we consider ourselves a restaurant as well. I believe this to will receive a lot of attention as the salads are creative, delicious and healthy.”
So name that restaurant!!!
Now that you know a little bit about what the new restaurant will entail – get naming!
You can submit multiple suggestions – so use your creativity, sense of humor, and so on. Naturally, profane or off-color names will likely NOT be selected, but have fun anyway.
Ummmm. Pizza.

If all else fails, the guy should just go with his last name like everyone else in town (Benny Tudinos, Grimaldi’s, Napol…). It’s a unique name for Hoboken. And you’ve got to consider if you make it for decades, it’s a business name you won’t have remorse over.
Good luck.

This is my first posting since the contest began, and I have to say that, ” CELESTINO’S ” is in the running to possibly win. In addition, I would also like to ask the community what they would consider the ultimate Pizza place? What would everyone consider to be the top 3 fundamentals that would excite everyone. ie: food selection, services offered, price, hours to be open etc.. I want this to be a community place where family and all are welcome, day or night. I look forward to hearing from everyone. Thank you for all of your suggestions and ideas, they are greatly appreciated!!

Wow that’s cool! If you think about the name Celestino’s “Heavenly Pizza” it can be worked into the menu by using the names of constellations, I’ll have a Hercules or a Pegasus, could be names of a special pie or a sandwich, I think you can do a lot of things with the Heavenly Theme. Thanks for considering my entry Gregg!

Even better: we could call a decent slice ‘Haley’s Comet’ – cos you only ever get one every 75-to-76 years in this town!

Personally, I don’t like the name it sounds too commercialized and I hate the way they stated, “Gourmet Salads, Sandwiches, and more”. The first thing that comes to my mind when I hear that is “Gourmet” prices.
So many more authentic sounding names they could have picked from, that is my two cents.

It’s not broke. Why’s this guy fixing it?
They were one of the most successful establishments in the city & this genius is coming in w/plans on changing so many of the things that made them so successful.
He’ll be lucky if he even gets a chance from some of their most loyal customers.
IMO, he’s not starting off too strong w/the extreme makeover b/c I strongly disagree w/his statements & the new name.
If his pizza’s anything like his ideas & judgement, I don’t think he’ll be around long.
I’ll LOL if he’s “doomed” w/in two years.
