Hobokenpix: Cruddy street example

Hoboken Photos of the Day – 6/15/2009

While Hoboken has several hundred thousand dollars budgeted for road improvements in 2009, I found this intersection at 9th and Madison would be a good candidate for “poster child” of Hoboken streets.

For one, the road is buckling like a mini-mountain peak. I can only imagine what lies beneath. Additionally, I found it ironic that they even bothered painting these bike lanes on such a crappy road – a giant pothole that – if you “stayed within the lines,” you’d end up going head over heals and flip your bike.

They should have waited till the entire stretch of road was smooth before wasting money on paint.

The two major potholes have been fixed ( around noon today ) near Mt Madison, however I witnessed a woman praise her giant mastiff looking dog for taking a massive hot brown steaming dump on the sidewalk near the liquor store there. She then smiled and walked away leaving the land mine there to ruin someones new nike’s…I was tempted to follow her home and pinch a loaf outside her building however I had just relieved myself moments earlier.

I live on Madison St (isn’t my user name clever?), and the street gets worse as you head uptown, past 7th street. It’s embarrassing to tell family who comes to visit they shouldn’t drive down the block because they could wind up with a flat, a cracked axle or worse. The cab drivers also give people I know a hard time because they don’t want to drive on the street – with good reason. In the past few years, all the old warehouses on Madison were torn down and new condo/rental buildings went up. All those construction vehicles, and the 18-wheelers delivering to Shoprite have made Madison street a safety hazard for drivers, bikers and pedestrians. The bike lane that was just painted (why here and now? I don’t know!) is the only part of the road that is even flat enough to drive on. So, I’m sorry bikers but you better watch out because when I am driving down that block, I’m staying as far left as I can until the city wakes up and fixes it. (But I’ll only aim for the people who don’t pick up after their dogs, but that’s a whole separate issue in Hoboken.)

Avoid Madison street as best you can until it’s fixed because it’s not worth the damage it will cause to your vehicle!

Who is the jackass that decided it was worth wasting time and money to paint bike lanes on a street that was scheduled for re-paving?

The Jackass that suggested city layoffs ,demotions and then
drafted an ordanance to create bike paths over pot holed
streets..duhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.BTW the holes are caused by the provious winters inclement weather. One can bend the front
end of her shwinn bike in them holes.Gee ): The county
owns willow ave ,observer hy and maybe 1st st..Even they
are not up to par if one calls patching roadwork..

Most towns would leverage the new development and get the builders to fix the streets as a condition of building those condos. Instead of putting some extra money into his own pockets, Roberts should have had those roads fixed. It’s a disgrace to have roads like that surrounded by brand new development.
