Readerpix: Scooter Cops

6/15/2009:
Hoboken411 reader 8thStGuy sent in this picture of some Hoboken Police officers training on their new Segway Scooters. I appreciate all contributions, but feel he was being a bit unfair – like ‘em or not, these scooters are part of the police force now, and proper training isn’t a bad idea.

“They should be spending their time practicing walking the beat instead of this nonsense.”

[Stay tuned for tomorrow's Readerpix entry! - Note: one reader's photo(s) will be featured each day at approximately 11am. Unless your photo is time-sensitive - it will be published in the order it was received! Additional note: Your pictures will have a better chance of being published if they're in "landscape" mode, as opposed to the taller "portrait" modes... ]

I saw a Hoboken cop as big as Lenz yesterday. Are there no fitness regulations for street(car) cops? This guy couldn’t climb 5 stairs without being winded

Almost half the cops aren’t out on the streets. Maybe he was one of the dozens of supervisors? Listening to Obama I’ll agree w/ the man on one thing, fat people cost more to insure. Maybe we ought to only give completely free health insurance to the non-obese & non-smokers. Let folks w/ high risk factors where they are at risk because of the choices they make pay a portion of their insurance (and other costs). I bet those cops (and city workers) get skinny real quick if we do that……..

Do you think the Harley cops make of these guys? And are the scooters going to be used in rainy or cold weather?

Can anyone explain the justification for these things in a 1 sq mile town?

No.9 Magic Pete is on ‘topic’ regarding the justification for these Segway scooters. Perhaps, a call to the Acting Police Chief Lisa or Capt. A. Falco would provide the infomation. I have seen them used in other states and although not a police officer, I would think that they can patrol more of an area than a foot patrolman and respond very efficiently in our congested steets as compared to a patrol car. Their apparent efficiency with the savings in costly fuel with no emissions to the environment seem apparent. Of course, weather will dictate what vehicle is used for certain days or when a foot patrol is better.
