Margaret Reports: You Decide

5/11/2009:

Whew – not sure what to say!

11th Street crossing guard (and Democratic Committeewoman) Margaret O’Brien is a staple of Hoboken. She’s not afraid to express herself, gets involved with the community and researches everything from A to Z – and beyond.

The other day we were chatting on the corner, and she started going WAY in-depth about these proposed “pumps” in Hoboken. Even though she’s my elder (just by a little) – I couldn’t keep up with her! Maybe it was because I was on my way to get morning coffee – maybe not. But here’s what I can recall her telling me:

  • Whomever is claiming to get the “first” pumps in Hoboken is wrong. The first one is on 11th and Hudson.
  • Adding additional pumps will “flood the city with CaCa.”
  • When the pipes were malfunctioning at her building “children became sick with bacillary dysentery.”
  • Even so – the wooden pipe infrastructure uptown is a priority over the pumps – as they won’t stand the pressure.

She provided me with a stack of papers (notes, web links, news stories) – and I’ll leave it up to you to decide (and decipher) what they mean.

Here’s a video of Margaret explaining the 11th Street station:

We should support the NHSA plan to install a pump in the southwestern area of Hoboken. The team from EmNet that did a study on this issue had also developed the successfully implemented plan to address flooding in Southbend Indiana. The full proposal for Hoboken would have installed a total of 4 pumps to send storm water to the river and a series of automated weirs to control the direction of water flow through existing sewer pipes.

However, the team indicated that a single (abeit very large) pump in Hoboken’s southwest basin would handle most of the flooding problem at considerably lower cost.

Wooden pipe infrastructure???! cant stand the pressure?! bacillary dysentry??!! Egad – is there any doubt that Hoboken is turning into a third world country as we speak?

She is a pain.
In the morning she stops me and the traffic to let people cross the street because they are running late to catch the bus. This happens when I have the green light.
She is there to cross the children and make sure that they are safe. Not to be holding up traffic because people are runnig late. I saw her yelling at a man (about 50) for not crossing at the corner. The man was about 8 feet from the corner. Let her yelled at me.

Yea, she’s a bit of a nut IMO as well. But hey, at least she spends her time trying to make things better in this town. Right?

I applaud Margaret for her efforts, however within this massive stack of notes and “documentation” appears to be mostly her personal ramblings and a couple of references to a few pumps elsewhere in the United States which may have failed. Nowhere is there detailed technical information on the particular pumps installed in Hoboken at 11th st or proposed to be installed elsewhere.
I was under the impression that the pumps installed at 11th st a few years back are for a completely different purpose than those proposed for elsewhere in the city. I was looking for the technical information to back this up, but could not find it within the stack of notes provided.

A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

Not sure if Beth Mason’s campaign is this dumb or
one of the other campaigns is setting her up, but this is
just another reason to not vote for any of the City Council
Candidates.

If hoboken411 can not post the complete Flyer, it states,
“EARN $75 NOW!!! ….bring in your UNSEALED
Absentee Ballot….”.

Talk about illegal.

As posted elsewhere, this is obviously an illegal dirty trick against Mason. However, I don’t know why Mbattle76 insists on posting it in every thread.
