NYC area hotel on a budget

“A question for the readers:

My sister is a principal of a K-8 school in northwest Montana and will be bringing a bunch of her school kids to visit next month. She wants to do the NY tourist thing – Chinatown, Little Italy, Village, Rockefeller, Times Square, Central Park, Natural History. Is there such a thing as an affordable – and I mean affordable – hotel in Manhattan or should she be looking on this side of the river.

Any suggestions?”

Springtime- Thanks VERY much for this information. I think I’m good with my hotel but will be vigilant! I love the registry. I checked Vegas (since everyone seems to be going) – stay away from the Trop.

Katie, I always just do a Google search and also make sure to check the Tripadvisor website. Here’s an interesting link to a site called Bed Bug Registry. Worth a check: http://bedbugregistry.com/. But I wouldn’t trust it alone since I doubt many people know about the site. Interesting fact mentioned in the UK article (which was all spot on as far as my research goes): that one person in a household may get bitten more than others. We experienced that. Both of us got bitten, but me more so. My bites turned into large, raised itchy welts that took two-three weeks to disappear whereas my husband’s were gone in days. I was concerned enough to see my doctor. We were extra-alarmed because at the time, our now-toddler was still an infant, sleeping in our room, but she was never bitten (that I could tell). Many people say given a man and a woman, the woman will end up with more bites. Same thing happened to my friend from Germany in an NYC hostel this winter. Not sure if this is true, but it sure was for us. Despite being attacked for not having any idea what I’m talking about, my husband’s and my research on every hotel we or he stays in indicates that the more reputable a hotel is, the better chance you won’t see complaints. (He travels weekly, and stays all over the world in a variety of hotels and we’ve been obsessed with this issue for over… Read more »
