Free Comic Book Day on May 1st!

Free Comic Book Day 2010

On Saturday May 1st, from 9am to 4pm, Hoboken comic book shop and jeweler Traders of Babylon (265 First Street) is participating in the 2010 Free Comic Book Day!

Free Comic Book Day is a single day when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores, with no purchase required and no strings attached.

Owner Steve Kilnisan said he really enjoys this event, which is now in it’s ninth year – and expects to give away thousands of free comic books (up to TEN per customer!) Additionally, busloads of kids from Hoboken schools are also expected to attend. He thinks the comics are a “cool, hip way” to promote reading.

When: Saturday, May 1, 2010 – 9AM to 4PM
Where: TRADERS OF BABYLON 265 First Street, Hoboken, New Jersey 07030

If I’m not mistaken, the 10 freebies are special free edition issues, not really the other hard-core comics in the store. Spider-Man, Iron Man and all the rest, you have to pay. Nonetheless, as a marketing strategy, it’s pure genius!

The whole list can be seen here: http://www.freecomicbookday.com/comics.asp

Not sure if he will be carrying them all, as the stores do pay for the comics, but a reduced price(publishers use lighter paper stocks etc for the FCBD issues to make them more affordable)

If they have the DC Kids Sampler, it probably has a sample of ‘Tiny Titans’ in it which is a great kids comic by Art Balthazar and Franco. Main premise is that all the sidekicks attend Sidekick Elementary and all the wackiness that goes along with that.

I have a Toxic Avenger issue #1, but I don’t think it’s the same series Midtownauthentic is looking for. My comic book is probably from ’90 or ’91. It’s from Marvel and was more kid-friendly than the movies. Nostalgia prevents me from parting with my 20-year old collection. But if I ever change my mind, I will bring it by your store to see if anything interests you.

I haven’t collected on a regular basis in years, but I was in your store recently browsing around with a friend. It’s a wonderful place. How far back to your back issues go? If you don’t usually have stuff that’s about 20 years old, is it possible to order it?
