Fire at Union Dry Dock

Update:

Added a few more user-submitted pictures to the gallery below. Thanks to Mary Anne, Roger, and Jean-Pierre (who sent the most recent shot from the extreme western edge of town – showing the long smoke trail.)

Pier on Fire

A raging fire is taking place on one of the piers at Union Dry Dock along Sinatra Drive.

“Heavy smoke – fire going good…”

It came from Liberty State Park in Jersey City. “As Hoboken’s Public Safety Director Bill Bergin piloted the boat up the Hudson River to it’s dock at the 14th Marina, he noticed the smoke and flames at the end of the pier, and alerted the HHD, Blohm said.” – Many report that the Director frequently pilots this boat singly up and down the river. Should not fire officers and firefighters be the ones to fight dock fires with this boat?
Should the one responsible for an appox. $30 mil public safety budget be operating this boat alone? Oh! this is Hoboken responsibility and accountability 🙄

That was my first thought too, but I agree with Tama, it would be sad to see the last part of the busy waterfront close up.

Did the fire do any damage to the business?

Sad news…

Union Dry Dock—one of the last of the old Hoboken waterfront industries.

Curious about the fire’s source…?

Btw, that would be the extreme EASTERN side of town. NYC is east of Hoboken.
