Tree down on 1st Street

3/30/2009:

Timber!

Today’s gusty winds must have weakened this sad tree on First Street between Willow and Park enough to knock it over… the light blue Lexus SUV suffered some body minor damage as a result.

If damage is incurred by private workers or individuals to trees in town they should be forced to pay to replace the tree and for the city cleanup costs if city employees were used to clear the tree.

As an example, there was a case a few months ago that was posted here on Jefferson St in which a person (“guido”) in a moving truck took out a tree. It remains a bare stump today.

It is doubtful that this tree will be replaced anytime soon since we know the town doesn’t haven’t money for it.

don’t play coy mister. how do you know they weren’t long time employees? how do you know they didn’t own the landscaping business? how do you know they didn’t own the building there? just because they were out there killinng a 20yr old tree that provides shade and lovely blooms (next month is the 1st street spring bloom show!) doesn’t mean they were “day laborers” or are here in out country illegally taking jobs from Americans killing 20yr old shade trees in hoboken.

Well, that would do the trick. But who cares about the tree anyway. Our motto is develop or die now, so trees are unimportant. Pavement and high-rises from one end of town to the other, that is what we need. The purpose of our city now is to build, build, build so we can generate tax revenues for the city! Long live the machine, long live the bloat, long live the entitled few that get to live forever in affordable housing no matter how affluent they become. Long live the kleptocratic republic of Hoboken!

By the way, hacking at the roots has to be one of the dumbest things I have heard in a while. It just defies common sense. They should have either removed the tree and planted a smaller one (one that won’t grow that big to begin with – and also one that bears no fruit – lots of smaller trees have fruit and they are a magnet for birds, and bird poop) or removed the pavers.
