3/18/2009:
Interesting in finding out more about the Hoboken Cove Community Boathouse? Well head on down next Tuesday, March 24th from 6-8pm (Sinatra Drive at Maxwell Place).

Hoboken Boathouse Public Meeting
David Downs says: “Come tour the new Boathouse and beach at Maxwell Place Park and learn more about the Hoboken Cove Community Boathouse organization. Presentations will include an overview of Hudson River boating and how other NY Harbor boathouses – like the Long Island City Community Boathouse, Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club, and the Downtown Boathouse – operate. We are also looking for your input on the types of boating programs and activities Hoboken residents want and your help to make these goals a reality.
Meeting is open to all interested participants – beginner, expert, and non-paddlers alike.
Please RSVP (or for more information), by email at info@hobokencoveboathouse.org.”
Additionally, Carter Craft added: “Right now there is a boathouse at Maxwell Place which is open for very limited public programs – we would like to do MORE this summer and serve more diverse audiences and user groups. Also, the Hoboken Cove Community Boathouse has secured just over $230,000 in funds for the REAL boathouse we want, which will be on the actual Cove beside the Tea Buildings. (We are trying to figure out what is taking the city so long to get that going, but that’s a subject for another conversation)
so if you are interested in ANY of these topics please come to the public meeting on the 24th!”

Why is this not a “REAL” boathouse?

well it looks like a real boathouse, but from what I’ve heard the group has always wanted a boathouse on the Cove north of the Tea building. That area is an actual cove, because it’s a relatively large and calm body of water, surrounded on 3 sides by land, and out of the main current of the river and therefore more user friendly for beginners…

Those interested in seeing a boathouse at the Hoboken Cove may be happy to hear that Second Ward Councilwoman Beth Mason is working to secure grant money for the location. At the last council meeting Beth sponsored a resolution to apply for $600,000 in parks development funding from the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund for cleanup of the area.
The money would be put towards the multi-million dollar hazardous materials cleanup needed on the site before a public park and boathouse can be built there. The city has been working to get grant money for the project from several sources.

In the interest of the greater good, maybe we can utilize the boathouse for overflow homeless housing since the end of this month will find more people losing jobs and apartments. Just thinking…..

Oh, that’s a boathouse? I thought it was someone’s misplaced garage from one of the countless identical residential developments in the suburbs. With a roof-hole.

The meeting was very well attended, and lots of members of the community came out to support the boathouse. They talked about future plans like training of volunteers, possible trips, and the upcoming season.
