Readerpix: Sidewalk blockage

3/19/2009:

Hoboken411 reader Shannon became a bit miffed about this car blocking the sidewalk.

“I snapped some pictures of the same car that parks in their “driveway.” It only happens every so often, but it really started to bother me when I saw an older women, trying to go around the car. I’m sure this is a common occurrence around the city, but just thought I would share.”

What do you think of this? What are some other notorious sidewalk offenders?

I noticed a particular car parked in a driveway on a regular basis. The first couple of times, I said, whatever, but enough was enough when I saw women wheeling strollers into the street to get around it. I called the cops and went back to make sure the cops gave it a ticket. Which I am pleased to say they did. They’ve also come every time I’ve called them about cars parked across crosswalks. I don’t call every single time I see something, it’s not exactly an emergency, but it is definitely a safety issue. Let’s not turn Hoboken into another version of the Queens Boulevard of death.

I will admit the cops can be a little selective in the City Hall area and so forth, but I think they deserve at least some credit. I’ve called any number of times over the years on various issues and they have generally been polite, except for one guy I had to yell at before he took me seriously, but he caved — probably figured I knew his mother or something. It’s a dog eat dog town, be creative. If all else fails, act like you grew up here. Although I admit, that can be quite a stretch.

They have them so they can selectively enforce them and write tickets. Ever notice that tickets get written just about everywhere except near city hall and the police station? LOL

If there’s nothing wrong with making a habit of parking across the sidewalk, then there’s also nothing wrong with making a habit of walking down the sidewalk with your keys in your hand as recommended by self-defense experts.

No you can’t always correct the issue because as you said, some people are just not going to have the morals to do the right thing
