Hobokenpix: Power sub-station

Hoboken Photo Gallery of the Day – 3/23/2009

Ever walk by this power sub-station uptown? The buzzing sound makes me a bit nervous – and I felt “funny” after taking these photos. Probably not healthy to be near this. Even the stuffed animal in the barbwire didn’t look too happy.

The substation is used to step power down to usable levels through transformation, which is a function of magnetic induction. That is the humming. This station probably steps 27KV down to 4.8KV or lower for local transmission, which is then transformed again for distribution to residences and business. As long as you don’t get too close, there is nothing to worry about 😯

Do you have any proof that the substation is unsafe in any way? Or even circumstantial evidence?

Because otherwise it’s just fear mongering.
And it’s much more effective if you hypothesize that terrorists could blow it up!

Foil hats only make you look stupid. Its perfectly safe by the time you get across the street, the field strength drops significantly. Power companies use very efficient equipment because extra EM fields means lost energy for them, so don’t worry. It is in their best interest to protect you.
