Readerpix: Hoboken Hawk pays a visit

2/26/2009:

Hoboken411 reader Jeff sent in this picture of the Hoboken Hawk paying a visit to his yard on Garden Street.

Hoboken411 reader photo of the day – 2/26/2009

“I just happened to look out the window at the tree in front of my house. I’m used to seeing squirrels and all sorts of birds, but I did a double take when I saw this beauty. I quickly grabbed my camera and zoomed in so as not to frighten it away. I believe this must be the hawk that has been spotted on occasion in Church Square Park. (I live on garden between 6th and 7th.) It only stayed a few minutes before taking off again. Made my day for sure!”

Unless your photo is time-sensitive – it will be published in the order it was received! Additional note: Your pictures will have a better chance of being published if they’re in “landscape” mode, as opposed to the taller “portrait” modes… ]

It does look like a peregrine falcon. There is a pair nesting in Jersey City on the roof of 101 Hudson Street. We have been watching the web cam for the last 3 years. The web cam is active starting in April after the eggs start hatching.

If your interested, here’s the link:

I’ve seen it! I saw him today, too– big fella! Maybe there’s more than one in town.

Excellent shot.

Has anyone heard a Mockingbird or Nightingale in town? I’ve heard one around Elysian park, seen another in Steven’s park, and even had the privilege of sitting next to one further uptown along Sinatra drive (but I didn’t have my f*ck’n camera, of course). Man, those little guys can sing 24 hours a day (albeit beautifully)!
