What good are traffic lights?

2/9/2009:

In a hurry?

A relatively minor car accident took place about 10 minutes ago at the intersection of First and Washington Streets. Many calls to HPD – but there were no injuries.

Can someone please explain the reason behind exactly why a crash would take place when you have traffic control measures installed?

I know its legal in most of NJ, but with high pedestrian traffic, it’s not practical. I’ve watched numerous cars try to zoom out onto Washington on a red and then there be a close call.

I’ve also almost been hit because a car was stopped and wanted to make a right on red and wasn’t looking at pedestrians (me) coming from the driver’s left. I say NO right on reds anywhere in town.
There are no right turns on red all across the town..
Yet I see drivers make them all the time.
I agree a lot of people do not pay attention to the signs, myself i try to do the right thing all the time i always say i’ll be the one to get caught. As for the rest of you that say there are not enough signs i would take a better look. Dont get me wrong i have children and i always think safety, but if you really look around there everywhere. But if you think there should be more signs this city does have a traffic div. if there’s anyone left..Im sure you can make a complaint, & most of the time the city does do what is asked.

Because NJ drivers suck at driving! At least New Yorkers have an excuse for sucking at driving because they rarely do. But come on Jersey! Learn to use your f’in signals, stop trying to sneak that left turn when an incoming car is coming, and for the love of god, get the f out of the left highway lane if you’re not passing anyone.

When you’re traveling south, would you be looking all the way to your left above the oncoming lane for the traffic light? Especially with the short block and the light at Newark just ahead clearly visible? (No they’re not always in sync)

Yes, I know that you should expect the light at every intersection on Washington. We all know that because we are familiar with the area. What about someone who’s not?

As for no right-turn on red – only a few of the numbered streets onto Washington still have this posted.
Another possible issue is the size of the light itself. It’s an older 8″ signal where an intersection on a main thoroughfare such as Washington really should have a newer 12″ signal. Bigger would be better in this case.

Most of the signals in Hoboken are quite outdated and not compliant with current MUTCD (the federal rule book for this sort of thing) at all. 😯

I live on Washington and I haven’t seen a single no turn on red sign by my building. I think there are few close to city hall, but that’s about it. If it’s a law, a large majority of people are unaware of it, including myself. No turn on red signs should go up everywhere there is a light.
