Readerpix: Icy Hudson River

1/19/2009:

Hoboken411 reader Cindy sent in these pictures of our icy Hudson River (doesn’t happen too often!)

Hoboken411 reader photos of the day – 1/19/2009

I took these pictures today to try and capture just how cold it has been.

[Stay tuned for tomorrow’s Readerpix entry! – Note: one reader’s photo(s) will be featured each day at approximately 11am. Unless your photo is time-sensitive – it will be published in the order it was received! Additional note: Your pictures will have a better chance of being published if they’re in “landscape” mode, as opposed to the taller “portrait” modes… ]

re comment # 6, thanks!

re comments # 7 & 8, James Fenimore Cooper in his novels about New York (Last of the Mohicans, Satanstoe, The Pathfinder, etc) refers to the Hudson freezing over and people using sleds to get around, although I think he says it only froze a bit further up river.

when exactly was that? the harbor is salt water. the low tide will bring ice downriver from the north where the river has lower/little salinity. when was it “common” to walk across the hudson?

at one time is was common to be able to walk across the hudson on solid ice during the winter. we may get there again soon at this rate. So long global warming!

Well, I “heard” from a “friend”, I’ll call him “Joe”, no, “Jim” that the massive chunks of ice will eventually end up making holes in the hull and causing the boat to sink. Not that I have any prior experience with this, though. No, not me. Just something I heard. By the way, if anyone wants a slightly used red sailboat, masts & all, I can tell you where to get it. Close to Hoboken. Just have to, uh, pick it up yourself.[/quote]

I actually know some sweeds out on shelter island that could fix that right up for you joe…i mean jim — ha, sorry to hear about his boat
