Recent Dry Cleaner closings

1/6/2009:
A couple dry cleaners downtown have either closed up shop – or are in the process of falling under “new management.” How can that be?
One closed – the other ?
Here’s a picture of the SkyClub Cleaners (which I never even had the chance to add to the 411 Directory) – closed and for rent:
And another – Ling’s Dry Cleaners (564 1st St)- closed up shop.
However, I walked by yesterday – and a bunch of Asian men were both inside muddling with the registers, and outside performing some minor work. I asked one of the men inside what’s going on and he mumbled “new management.” In an attempt to clarify when he meant, I asked “new management or new owners?” in which he replied “yes.” Oddly, the man had a MASSIVE black eye (his left one). Not sure if he was the previous owner – or the current one. Due to the language barrier, I chalked up my losses and carried on. They should re-open within a week.
Later on, a Hoboken resident speculated that the black eye was probably a result of “gambling debts” or “Chinese mob.” Oh boy.

I suspect the Sky Club dry cleaner closing is symptomatic of the gentrification in the SW part of town not taking hold like the developers assumed it would a few years back. I’m sure the condos are nice inside, but Harrison Street still has about all the charm and quaintness of an auto body lot.

The people at Ling’s are pretty nice. It’s too bad they left. Now that there’s a Deli a block away, I wonder what will go in there.

Whats the difference if they send it our vs. cleaning it in house? It still gets cleaned and pressed regardless

Sometimes I wonder if my clothes really get cleaned of if they just press stuff. A few times I had to take stuff back to the cleaners on Park and Newark because spots were still on clothes – and they send there stuff out..

Many of them do the dry cleaning on premises, but most (if not all) send out the laundry.

there are only 2 licensed locations in hoboken for on-premises dry cleaning. the chemicals are super toxic and tightly regulated. one is at newark/bloomfield, all the rest of the cleaners send EVERYTHING out. most send shirts to a massive location in hackensack.

The place on 1st does organic dry cleaning on premises guess organic is not tightly regulated.

they moved to DY on 1st. apparently it’s the same owner. I stopped going to DY cause i didn’t like it, then i find out Ling’s is basically the same place. Can’t win!
A new dry cleaner is going there….dunno when they are opening though.

Yeah, I have a sinking feeling it is Carey’s on Willow between 6th and 7th. I’m pretty sure they do all the dry cleaning on site. It was very sad that the previous owner got some sort of cancer of the throat about a year ago and lost his voice.

The difference for me i guess is just a mental thing. I would rather see the facility that my clothes are getting cleaned in. I should also say tho that ling did reg laundry also (which is what i meant originally) and it would take like 3-4 days to get them back and they were closed on sundays.
