Unhappy with Skyclub Fitness

12/30/2008:

There’s no doubt that gyms in Hoboken (and probably everywhere else) – seem to be involved with the most mud-slinging around! (Along with local politics – and hair salons!)

One Hoboken411 reader sent this message to SkyClub Fitness (and copied 411)… sigh.

Management Complaint Box

“Dear Sky Club Fitness Center:

The purpose of my email is to alert you of some rude and obnoxious remarks your sales manager made during his sales pitch to me today. When learning about the different packages and fees, he felt it was appropriate to tell me that if I curbed my other spending such as bars, drinks and Louis Vuitton bags then Sky Club would seem more affordable. Then when I told him I had to discuss the fees with my fiance, he said “If your fiance has an issue with you bettering your health then maybe your marrying the wrong person.”

On top of the inappropriate remarks, the cost of your gym is exorbitant. Your least expensive package comes out to $1800 which is double the price of any other gym in Hoboken. You have some nerve charging this fee considering the rude management you have running the place. Good luck getting clients to join with this new price.

Sincerely,

New Club KO member”

Hey gnoor…

In case you didn’t notice the GM of Sky Club has been posting answers to all questions that people have asked. Did it ever occur to you that MAYBE this gym is getting better and making positive changes and perhaps THAT is why people are now saying good things? Hmmm… food for thought.

Great club. Just joined. Prices are $99 per month or $125 per month, which includes free parking and childcare. Much better club than H club. Adding a Boxing Gym.

I called them the other day to get pricing. I am a past member, who moved on to Club H because it was closer to my job, but now I want something closer to home. I wasn’t a big SkyClub fan when I was a member, but i thought I’d give them another shot.

The sales woman said they dont give out pricing over the phone, insisting that I take a tour. I understand her job is sales, but I don’t have time to see a club I already know. She refused to give pricing.

Then I called Club KO. The sales manager at Grand also offered a tour and wanted to discuss membership in person. I told her I plan on taking a free class, but I would prefer to get pricing over the phone. She gave me their rates, and I will be joining next week.

All these different management groups at the SkyClub, and none understand they’re in the customer service business?

I didnt realize there were two groups about the Sky Club so I wanted to post again here as well… I wanted to leave a quick comment for everyone who has been posting about the Sky Club. I moved to the area a few months ago and since having twins in December I have been looking for a place to start working out and lose the evil baby weight. Of course I wanted to research the local gyms before deciding to join. While researching, I came across Hoboken 411 and learned of all the past experiences at Sky Club. Being the type of person I am I decided I wanted to see for myself what they have to offer. I have to say I was completely blown away and amazed by what I saw. From the past comments I expected something awful but instead I feel I found a diamond in the rough. Not only was the staff very happy and pleasant, but the gym was clean and inviting. The pool area looks gorgeous and while I was there a swimming class was taking place which was a great interest to me. I brought up some of the things I have seen here on the board such as the towel situation and the prices and the sales girl answered both immediately by telling me they have ordered new towels and the prices were very competitive. Once she went through their new memberships with me I was so elated that I… Read more »

i’ve heard so many terrible things, but i guess i don’t really understand. to me, i would make it simple. there are other options in town. therefore, why not give a trip to this place a shot to find out about membership, but USE THE LEVERAGE of having other options to drive a very hard bargain. that is, don’t put up with ANY of their purported crap about “wellness” and their questioning your commitment to your health if you aren’t willing to spend boatloads of money. give it right back to them. i guess my point is, what is there to lose??

similarly, ask them to put everything in writing. refuse bullsh*t fees like membership fees, cancellation fees. tell THEM the way it’s going to be. they NEED the business. you don’t.
