Hi – I was searching the archives to see if there was any discussion about Christmas Eve dinners last year as I am hosting this “event” at my house this year. Let me start by saying I am a horrible cook and how it has wound up that my family wants to have it here in Hoboken is beyond me. Anyway, does anyone know any good places to cater from? There are going to be Italian guests at my house (in-laws), so I want to do something nice and traditional for everyone. Any suggestions are so greatly appreciated!! Happy Holidays!

Our Feast of Seven Fishes usually totals about 10 fishes. Something like:

Appetizers: stuffed clams, shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, marinated anchovies
Pasta:choice of three sauces: marinara, garlic and oil, or calamari
Dinner: lobster, stuffed shrimp, scallops, sea bass, baccala, stuffed flounder

It’s a five hour family meal, everyone cooking, cleaning, one long table of 25 people, which is why no restaurant can really do it justice.

In years past, I think Lupa in NYC has offered a restaurant version.

My irish/italian family has been doing the 7 fish dinner on christmas eve forever. The tradition came from my in-laws and went from my wife to my daughters, all of the females, including the litte ones, are involved in the preparation in some way. It seems to me its not about the food but the good times and laughs everybody has and the memories. In fact 2 of my kids did in one year in north carolina and now all of the “red neck” neighbors look foward to it. We have had as many as 30 people eating. Its going to crazy this year because my daughters due date for her baby is around the same time.
