Monday Morning QB – 11/10/2008

11/10/2008:

Hope everyone had a nice weekend! Here’s a little Monday morning “Coffee-Talk” to get the week started…

Are you off today or tomorrow?

veterans-day-hoboken-nj.jpgSpeaking of (long) weekends – I never quite knew for certain whether Veterans Day was an official holiday or not and how many people have the day off. With City Hall closed in Hoboken today – what about the rest of you?

Giants vs. Eagles

giants-eagles-november-9-2008.jpg

Things weren’t looking good for the Super Bowl Champions last night, as the Giants were picked off on their first drive – and the Eagles converted the turnover into 7 points. The rest of the first half – the Big Blue seemed to do well on offense (when they didn’t turn it over), while the Philly had a bit more trouble going – but benefited greatly from turnovers – leaving the score at halftime 20-17 Giants.

Hope returned for the Eagles in the second half, as they scored on their first possession – taking a 24-20 lead.

The rest of the second half was like John Madden said “A good heavyweight fight” – and the NY Giants prevailed 36-31 (thanks to two blown challenges by the Eagles).

Regardless if the losing team “played well,” every loss in the NFL is crucial, and now the Eagles will have to step it up and play nearly flawless football the rest of the season, and hope that some of the teams ahead of them fall off the pace in order for them to stand a chance at the playoffs.

The Giants, meanwhile, are looking good for the top spot in the NFC!

Mayor Roberts is Number One!

Last week – I ran a quick poll to see who you would remove from Hoboken City Hall (that poll is now to the left – in case you didn’t vote).

Although his days in office may be numbered (if he decides to run for Mayor again – and loses) – many folks still picked him (over 70%). Other council members were also voted here and there – with Peter Cammarano coming in a distant second. A reader added Louis Picardo (City Tax Collector) – as a write in vote.

I don’t think you or the other outspoken people understand the environment that you are in. Hoboken is a small town which has just recently been “invaded” by outside influence. There is a struggle going on between old and new. You are witnessing this. Only someone that was raised in a small town, such as I was, can recognize this. The town I grew up in had a population of only 5000. Town politics was often taken care of on the lake while fishing for walleye or at the bar after a Tuesday night softball game. You have a meshing of “new” politicals who see room for improvement and want to rise and make a name for themselves. These neo-bokenites are challenging the “good ol boys” who have been in the community for generations and are use to handling the business in an environment that does not include a huge 78 watt spotlight. Calling the Mayor “evil” because of the situation the city is currently in, is exactly why the city is in the situation it is in. Many act as if this situation was brought on purposely. I am pretty sure that all those associated with the city operations, did not purposefully bring on a budget deficit of X%. However, checks-and-balances does not work when there is no checks and what is supposed to be a balance of ideas, ideals and procedure turns into lawsuits, subpoenas and depositions. No one likes being shown a new trick worse than the… Read more »

Success is 80% showing up” a Woody Allen quote was mentioned the recent 11/5 council meeting. You can see it on cable 78.
The other 20% is what you are talking about…do something about it. There are budget workshops starting 11-17-08 at city hall starting at 7 PM…and the next council meeting is
11-24-08 at 7PM. Hoboken needs a change in leadership, become informed and vote accordingly in the upcoming May 09 elections for Mayor and 3 council-at-large seats 😛
I’m interested in starting a campaign to take down Roberts and the rest of his crew. I understand that there is corruption wired throughout the counties of NJ, but if we can start clean here, by at least weeding out a few and throwing them into the flames, then it’s a start. It is completely unacceptable for Roberts to claim his stake in a town that has potential to be positively influential. Now is not the time to turn the other cheek. Especially as the financial crisis is on the verge of taking a turn for the worst, we need to take a stand against evil men, such as Roberts, and claim our own stake in this town. I don’t have all the answers, but Hoboken is full of educated and caring people who actually want to see clean politics rule for a change. It is possible. And, yes it starts by bringing down Roberts and the rest of his toolbox.
I would go as far to say you dont have ANY answers.
