Readerpix: Stormy Hoboken

10/16/2008:

Today’s Readerpix entry from Hoboken411 reader “Hansbrix” is an awesome set of “Stormy Hoboken” pictures from over 15 years ago! Not just ONE picture – but several for you to enjoy!

During the Nor’easter of 92, the waterfront/train station/PATH flooded pretty bad (there was a bathtub ring on the walls almost two feet off the floor) but, oddly enough, I didn’t notice anything unusual back on Jefferson/2nd where I lived at the time.

Hoboken and floods are synonymous!
So it flooded by the PATH, but not in the 4th Ward? Doesn’t that tell you something that over-development plays a role in how much it floods?
I don’t remember the specifics of that storm, but there may have been a large storm surge at high tide, but not much rain. That would be one reason for only flooding by the PATH and not in the back end of town.

Ay-yup, I remember that storm, though I thought it was in ’93. I had just finished a two-year renovation of my ground-floor unit two weeks earlier. The drains outside my front and back doors were spewing sewage into the apartment. My new hardwood floors were awash in six inches of murky water, tampons, and doo-doo.

Welcome to Hoboken!

Of course.

I lived on Jeff/2nd at the time (12/1992). Don’t remember any real flooding until Oct 1996. If there was a storm surge strong enough to flood the PATH and NJT station, just think what would happen on the west side now if history repeats.

I’m definitely bringing the camera for that!
