DOA 3rd & Garden

7/12/2008:

Whoa, I hate hearing news like this on the Live Hoboken Police and Fire Scanner, but 10 minutes ago, HPD received a call from 3rd and Garden Street that a man woke up to find his girlfriend dead in bed. The dispatcher said that the man was mumbling, and appeared to under the influence of something (which I think could also be the shock of waking up to a horrible sight like that.)

PD called the Medical Examiner and prosecutors office to come to the scene.

i know her. that’s not her in the photo. she’s a super cool chick, smart, clever, hot, caring (i’m a chick, not a dude). it’s so upsetting. yeah, she did some drugs, like so many successful people in NY. we were friends for a while, but got out of touch (cuz she was too much into drugs). I’m sure the boyfriend is only guilty of enjoying her company. She’s pretty good with judging people. i can’t believe it.

Emily was the first friend I met when I came to NYC 15 years ago. She was so funny, sweet and beautiful. We were very close friends for years but then when I left my job (where we worked together) we didn’t stay in touch as much. but I say her periodically, at her 40th birthday party.. I don’t understand why she did this to herself, but I understand her sadness. I called her two weeks before she died and left a message on her phone, but never heard back from her. I still can’t believe she isn’t here anymore, she was great. and being at her funeral it was so sad. I don’t know what happened to the george schultz dude who was with her but i hope he went to prison and has cleaned up her act. when I knew her she wasn’t into drugs, just alcohol… miss you Em…

Man charged in death of Hoboken woman who apparently OD’d
by Michaelangelo Conte

Hoboken Police have charged a man with failing to get help for a woman who died of an apparent drug overdose after using heroin and possibly other drugs with the man the previous night, officials said today.

Newark resident George V. Schultz, 44, who lived on North Street in Bayonne earlier this year, was charged with recklessly endangering an injured victim by failing to get help in a timely manner, tampering with evidence and drug possession on Monday, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said this afternoon.

“At this point he will not be charged with her death but the investigation continues,” DeFazio said.

Emily Kaufman, 41, was found dead at 10:04 a.m. Saturday in her home on Garden Street near Second Street.

An autopsy did not determine the caues of her death and further medical testing, including toxicology tests, must be done, DeFazio said, adding that her death is consistant with an overdose.

The prosecutor said it appears Kaufman became ill after doing drugs with Schultz on Friday night but Schultz did not seek help for her.

Kaufman went to bed that night and it was only when she did not wake up in the morning that he called someone and that person told him to call police, which he finally did, DeFazio said.

Schultz was charged with tampering with evidence because investigators belive he disposed of drugs that were at scene, DeFazio said.

I don’t know anything about a sublet (sounds credible but is a separate issue anyway) but I also heard from a couple of the building residents that the fire began in the apartment of the guy who died, that he and his 2 roommates were partying, one of them went out to a bar, he went to bed, and the 3rd roommate was in another room and got out. I don’t know if it was a candle or whatever was in the ashtray or what.

There are more than enough stories in Hoboken requring followup and not enough time for one media organization to keep up with all of them, no matter how big or small, but…if enough people on this board want to know about the viaduct driver, why doesn’t one of you write for the report, as FM said? Is it because posting a rumor and tryign to get someone else to do it instead takes a few seconds, and following up yourself takes hours? Someone else made a very good point. Speculating is easy, doing actual research is hard. Anyone see the followup on the Kenny hit and run in the reporter? In addition to printing all the speculation, they also talked to kenny, . While that may not shed light, it at least went to the source, so anyone can find out about the viaduct, so instead of trying to get someone else to do it and speculating why they dont, why don’t you? Plus the woman is still a mother of a teenage girl in town so there are other victims too…if you want to know the answer, you could write and find out instead of speculating. It does take time, yes

How about the fire at 1203 Washington. Have we ever gotten the final verdict on who/what started it?
From what I know about the situation by residents in the building and other people close to the investigation the apartment was being illegally subletted by a Hoboken Fireman who was charging top dollar rent while he was paying the usual good guy city employee rate. The renters were partying and left either a candle burning or had accidentally knocked an ash into something flammable. When the fire started the one victim was trapped in his bedroom and it was said that either some of the party goers had either left before the fire started or just as it was getting underway.
This is one of the most ridiculous statements I have ever heard. Everyone from Hoboken knows the yellow flats on 12th and Washington are owned by the applied companies. Which makes it hard for anyone, city employee or not, to own one and rent it out. Seems to me you’re just making up stories.
You obviously don’t know or understand how Hoboken works do you? And applied is an up and on the level operation right? Joe Barry the applied owner was never linked to any corruption on the county level or in town with the Russo’s? Barry never did an time for pay off’s and fraud correct? I make nothing up. Why don’t you do some asking around and watch how many doors get slammed in… Read more »
