Reported “street fight” near city hall

7/6/2008:
About 10 minutes ago on the live Hoboken Police and Fire Scanner, it was reported that there was a “street fight” in front of City Hall. Supposedly between one black male, and one Hispanic male.
A witness said they moved the fight west down Newark Street. How considerate. Police canvassed the area only to find nothing. Perhaps the cops couldn’t see them because the fight was between Tattoo and Steve Urkel?

I passed by there yesterday about 2pm when I noticed a HPD car parked directly on the sidewalk of Washington in front of 102 Wash. The cop was one of the spanish guys suing the city, Oliverri or something like that. He had some coked up homeless psycho stopped for an investigation who was obviously violent and causing a major scene in the area. Three other cops arrived and started talking to the guy and within a few minutes, all were best of buds. The cops leave and within 30 seconds of the last PD car pulling away the nut runs across the street and starts a fight with three guys a a woman in front of Carlo’s Bakery. The nut then makes a mad dash into traffic, pounds on a car, and begins cursing out a family that passed him by. At this time two other pals arrive who know the nut and they begin to crack open a bottle of whiskey on the benchs right outside City Hall. Another great job by the Hoboken Police!

I don’t think Tattoo was hispanic, probably Polynesian or Filipino. Not exactly sure wher Fantasy Island was located but I always assumed it was in the South Pacific.

Technically speaking, Herve Villechaize (the guy who played Tattoo) is French - he was born in France - but it’s Ron with the win: filipino ancestry.

I went home early one day last week and couldn’t believe the number of people sitting on the benches outside of city hall drinking out of paper bags. It was like 2pm in the afternoon and I saw at least 3 or 4 people drinking alcohol right in front of the building.
I guarantee they didn’t get $1000 fines.

Maybe they can be shamed into doing so? Someone should take pictures of the illegally parked cars across the street from the police station. I saw 3-4 there yesterday (not to mention all the ones too close to the corners parked nearby) and they seem to be there every weekend. Oh how I wish my old as dirt blackberry had a camera!

You want the open container laws enforced in front of City Hall? There is only one thing you can do about it: VOTE!
Every one of those people sitting there probably voted in the last 10 local elections. The block south of City Hall is mostly Applied Housing. The machine counts on them to vote in big numbers, and as long as they deliver the vote that keeps clowns like Dave Roberts in office they won’t get open container tickets.
There are enough newcomers and anti-machine BNR’s in town to change this dynamic, but until they vote in numbers large enough to counter the friends and family in subsidized housing and/or on the City/BoardOfEd/Hudson County (and now HUMC) payroll, we get the government we get.

I guarantee they couldn’t pay even if they were fined. A fine of $1K or $10 matters not when you’re as judgement proof as they are.
A different incentive is needed. Maybe one involving benches or bottles?

Judgement proof? Folks that don’t pay their fines GO TO JAIL. You don’t get a free pass for not having $ in your checking account.

Wrong. If you are born in the US you are an American citizen until and unless you renounce your citizenship or die.

Not wrong. What about all the people flooding the border who still consider themselves “Mexican” and not “American?” Lots of people who are born here consider themselves something other than American despite their citizenship.
