Thanks for all the comments. I think most of the things I will be doing will be small and will not need permits.

I installed a brass threshold plate on my front door around 5 pm once, needed 4 nails, and got some people angry that they had to come out and ask what I was doing.

Obviously, no permit needed, but the point is to do the work when no one’s around.
